Enemy Collision System - Implementation Summary

Overview

Successfully implemented a physics-based collision system with momentum transfer for the vampire survivor game. Enemies now bounce off each other and neutral entities, creating strategic gameplay opportunities.

Files Created

Purpose: Core collision detection and physics engine

Key Features:

  • Circle-based collision detection
  • Elastic collision physics with momentum transfer
  • Entity separation to prevent sticking
  • Configurable restitution (bounciness) parameters
  • Support for different mass values (enemies vs neutrals)

Main Methods:

  • resolveEnemyCollisions(enemies) - Handles enemy-to-enemy collisions
  • resolveNeutralCollisions(enemies, neutrals) - Handles neutral-to-enemy collisions
  • checkCircleCollision(entity1, entity2) - Detects overlapping circles
  • resolveCircleCollision(...) - Applies momentum transfer physics
  • separateEntities(...) - Pushes overlapping entities apart

Purpose: Centralized configuration for easy tuning

Configurable Parameters:

enemy: {
    restitution: 0.7,        // Bounciness (0-1)
    mass: 1.0,               // Enemy mass
    separationFactor: 0.5 // Overlap separation strength
}

neutral: {
    restitution: 0.8, // Higher bounce for solid feel
    mass: 100,               // Very high = immovable
    enabled: true // Toggle neutral blocking
}

performance: {
    enabled: true, // Toggle entire collision system
    maxEnemies: 50          // Performance limit
}

Files Modified

Changes:

  • Added velocity tracking properties: vx, vy, mass
  • Added movement parameters: acceleration, maxSpeed
  • Changed from direct position updates to velocity-based movement
  • Enemies now accelerate toward player instead of instant velocity
  • Velocity capped at maxSpeed for consistent behavior

Before:

this.x += dirX * this.speed * deltaTime;
this.y += dirY * this.speed * deltaTime;

After:

this.vx += dirX * this.acceleration * deltaTime;
this.vy += dirY * this.acceleration * deltaTime;
// Clamp to max speed
this.x += this.vx * deltaTime;
this.y += this.vy * deltaTime;

Changes:

  • Added velocity properties: vx, vy, mass (mass = 100)
  • Velocity reset to 0 in update() to keep neutrals stationary
  • Neutrals act as immovable obstacles despite having velocity for collision calculations

Changes:

  • Imported CollisionSystem
  • Added collision resolution after enemy updates:
    // Resolve enemy-to-enemy collisions with momentum transfer
    CollisionSystem.resolveEnemyCollisions(game.enemies);

    // Resolve neutral-to-enemy collisions (neutrals act as obstacles)
    CollisionSystem.resolveNeutralCollisions(game.enemies, game.neutralEntities);

Changes:

  • Added collision features to implemented features list
  • Added "Strategic Gameplay" section explaining kiting and positioning
  • Updated code structure diagram to include CollisionSystem and config
  • Added detailed "Collision System" technical section
  • Added configuration examples
  • Marked collision features as implemented in Future Enhancements

How It Works

Physics Implementation

1. Collision Detection:

  • Check all enemy pairs (O(n²) complexity)
  • Calculate distance between centers
  • Collision occurs when distance < sum of radii

2. Momentum Transfer: Uses elastic collision formula:

impulse = -(1 + restitution) * velocityAlongNormal / (1/mass1 + 1/mass2)

3. Velocity Update:

entity1.vx -= impulseX / mass1
entity1.vy -= impulseY / mass1
entity2.vx += impulseX / mass2
entity2.vy += impulseY / mass2

4. Separation: Prevents entities from sticking together by pushing them apart based on mass ratio

Gameplay Impact

Enemy Behavior:

  • Enemies bounce off each other when they collide
  • Creates dynamic gaps in enemy swarms
  • More realistic, organic movement patterns

Strategic Depth:

  • Players can kite enemies to create collisions
  • Collisions create temporary safe zones
  • Filled neutrals become defensive structures
  • Risk/reward positioning near neutrals

Neutral Entities:

  • Act as solid obstacles (mass = 100 vs enemy mass = 1)
  • Enemies bounce off hard (restitution = 0.8)
  • Create permanent safe zones when filled
  • Strategic placement becomes important

Performance Considerations

Collision Checks:

  • Max 50 enemies = ~1,225 checks per frame
  • At 60 FPS = ~73,500 checks per second
  • Each check is simple distance calculation
  • Acceptable for modern browsers

Optimization Options (if needed):

  • Spatial hash grid for broad-phase detection
  • Reduce check frequency
  • Lower max enemy count
  • Disable collision via config

Testing Recommendations

  1. Basic Collision:

    • Spawn 10-15 enemies
    • Verify they bounce off each other
    • Check for smooth movement
  2. Neutral Blocking:

    • Fill a neutral entity
    • Verify enemies bounce off it
    • Test safe zone creation
  3. Performance:

    • Spawn max enemies (50)
    • Check frame rate stays smooth
    • Monitor for any stuttering
  4. Parameter Tuning:

    • Adjust restitution in CollisionConfig.js
    • Test different values (0.5, 0.7, 0.9)
    • Find sweet spot for gameplay feel
  5. Strategic Gameplay:

    • Try kiting enemies around neutrals
    • Verify gaps form from collisions
    • Test if neutrals are reachable

Configuration Guide

Making Enemies Bouncier

// In CollisionConfig.js
enemy: {
    restitution: 0.9,  // Increase from 0.7
}

Making Neutrals Feel More Solid

neutral: {
    restitution: 0.95,  // Increase from 0.8
    mass: 200,          // Increase from 100
}

Softer Collisions (Less Scattering)

enemy: {
    restitution: 0.5,  // Decrease from 0.7
}

Disable Neutral Blocking

neutral: {
    enabled: false, // Enemies pass through neutrals
}

Disable Entire Collision System

performance: {
    enabled: false, // Turn off all collision
}

Next Steps

  1. Test in Browser:

    • Open vampire-survivor/index.html
    • Verify collision works as expected
    • Check for any errors in console
  2. Tune Parameters:

    • Adjust values in CollisionConfig.js
    • Find optimal gameplay feel
    • Balance challenge and fun
  3. Optional Enhancements:

    • Add visual effects on collision (particles, flash)
