Help with configuring Marker Hovers & Previews?! Please! 🙏🏻

Hello all! Please do excuse my naivety, I hope this is the right place for asking such a thing.

I'm trying to better understand how the Marker Hovers & Previews are configured, and I'm not seeing much in the documentation.

Obviously there is the section in Settings > Map View, and I have tinkered with every option there, but it doesn't really do a good job to explain exactly what and how it appears. I'm probably going to ramble on a bit here and hopefully some of it makes sense.

First and foremost, I seem to be having an issue with the preview scroll. When I hover over a marker, the preview is displayed with the scroll set at what seems to be a random part of the note. For example, here is one of the marker hovers...

As you can see, the scroll bar over there on the right as you can see, but there doesn't seem to be anyway way of actually scrolling through the preview because it disappears immediately after you hover away from the marker. And, for reference, here's the full post in question...

So, why is the preview scrolled so far down near the bottom of the post? Why wouldn't it be scrolled to the top of the post with the title and date?

Also, is there a way for the preview to stay put so that I can move the cursor over top of it and actually interact with it in anyway? Like, what are those 3 vertical dots there? What happens when I click them? I would never know because the preview disappears before I have a chance!

Now, to the list of settings! Let's start at the top...

Show note name on marker hover - What does this setting do? I have tried toggling it off and on many times, I tried reseting the Map View plugin, and still I can't figure out what it does. What is the "note name" exactly? Is that the file name? Is that a front-matter option called "name"?

Show native Obsidian popup on marker hover - What does this do? Again, I have tried toggling it, and can't figure it out. And, what does this mean -> "The native Obsidian preview is more feature-rich than the above, and not recommended together with it." Not recommended together with what? Also, what are the features and how are they configured?

I know this is probably a lot. Hopefully someone can help point me in the right direction!

Hi,
First, your screenshot seems to show a correct popup scroll placement: it did not scroll to a random location, but to show the actual geolocation in the note: the text that is highlighted in yellow, "3149 SE Alder Ct...".
This seems like the Map view popup -- the custom one inside Map View, which does not support interacting with the note (scrolling, etc).
If you want a fuller experience with the popup -- one you can scroll to view more of the note content etc, like you are asking, the "native Obsidian popup" should do it. Though I admit that trying it now, it did not seem to make a difference, and perhaps it's currently broken 🤔
I'm planning a bug fix release soon, will look into why this doesn't seem to work.

Thanks so much for the quick response! I have done a bit more digging, and I have a couple follow-up notes:

1 - I did some tinkering with entries that have inline geo markers (using the [](geo:) syntax) and I am understanding the behavior that you have mentioned, where the preview will scroll to the point of where the inline geolocation is, but something else is happening that was confusing me at first. In some cases, and it sorta seems to be random, when you first hover over a marker the scroll will be further up the post, showing some of the body text or part of an image, and then if you move the curser away from the marker and then back to the same marker, the scroll then shows inline geolocation. But generally, that functionality is working as you described.

2 - I have been trying to decide exactly how I want to use / configure this mapping functionality, and originally my idea was to have the inline geolocation link, but I am considering the possibility of not doing that and instead just using the location: front matter property. If I go that route, then the preview does indeed show the top of the file, but some things are not rendering. For example, here is a full post...

So, in some cases it is showing the title and date, sometimes just the date.

3 - Along those same lines, I am maybe seeing some sorta similar behavior that is mentioned in #409, but I am seeing it on desktop, and the behavior is a little bit different on my end. Looking at that issue and playing around with it in my scenarios, the preview window appears each time, but, based on different total line numbers of front matter, it displays different things. Here is one post example that I will show you the different behavior based on different total line numbers of front matter. The post at first has 19 lines of front matter.

This behavior is very repeatable on my end. So, should be easy to reproduce on your end.

4 - I am still curious what the Show note name on marker hover option is in the Map View Settings. Can't figure out what a note "name" is and toggling it doesn't seem to do anything on my end. Do you have any more insight into that?

5 - I am still interested in the Native Obsidian Pop-up Preview, glad to hear that it's also not working on your end and possibly there could be a fix for that at some point. You say that it is much more feature rich, but how are those features configured?

To follow-up on the Native Obsidian Page Preview.. that would be amazing if you could get this functioning with Map View. The native preview looks great and does everything I want it to do! 🙏

Hi,

A lot of what you are describing are known limitations of the preview functionality, which is using the renderer that Obsidian provides as API, and is knowingly incomplete.
There are some fixes to be made there (like in the described cases of too many properties), but beyond that, working on a full-fledged preview functionality is outside the scope of the already-too-little time I can devote to Map View.
The native pop-up should work, and I'll get it fixed once I can come around to working a few days on bug fixes, but to manage expectations, it completely outsources the preview to the Obsidian infrastructure; the upside it is that it's a much better preview, the downside is that it's not configurable in any way (perhaps there are plugins to configure it).
Re (4), a note name is what I think is shown in your preview titles. In the case of inline geolocations, the inline geolocation has its own name in addition to the note name, and can be displayed separately.

If the native pup-up were working, I'd be completely satisfied! I think it looks great and it does exactly what I want it to do.
