@pdewouters was implementing the pattern library on his project, and the question of grids came up. At the retreat, we decided to leave grids and remain opinionated about the page layout.

Personally, i'm not a fan of complex grid systems. I'm not sure its that hard a problem. But then the aim of the project is to aid with the speed of getting started, and improving brand consistency so I think this definitely fits within the remit.

I have had a bash as a super simple grid system. Its more a few classes and a mixin to get the width of a column within a given number of columns. https://github.com/humanmade/hm-pattern-library/blob/grid/src/styles/utilities/_grid.scss

Any thoughts on this? Should we add it to Juniper?

I think it would be an idea to have a default grid, that can be taken out and replaced if a project wanted to use a different grid. kinda like a add-on mentality where you can take it out if you dont like that bit.

I would go for a popular grid system as a default that has already has multi device tested rather than going for our own as grids can be a pain. Saying that, there is a point where including a grid make sit boilerplate template rather than a pattern library so the question i guess is - where is that line?

The more general the use case, the more difficult it gets to make decisions on what to include. If the pattern library is mostly used internally for HM P2s, hack projects, prototypes, I think having a simple grid will be beneficial, and keep layouts consistent.
