IAM System - Architecture Documentation

Version: 1.0.0 Last Updated: March 24, 2026 Status: Production Architecture

Executive Summary

IAM System is a passwordless-first, open-source authentication platform designed to replace Auth0, Azure AD, and Okta with:

  • 10x better developer experience (60-second setup vs 30-60 minutes)
  • 100x lower cost ($0-$600/year vs $24K-$150K/year for 100K MAU)
  • Phishing-resistant security (WebAuthn/FIDO2 passkeys by default)
  • Zero vendor lock-in (MIT license, full source transparency)

Core Architecture Principles

1. Passwordless-First (Not Passwordless-Optional)

Traditional Auth (Auth0/Azure AD):

Passwords (default) → MFA (addon) → Passkeys (premium feature)

IAM System:

Passkeys (default) → Magic Links (fallback) → Passwords (legacy support only)

Why this matters:

2. Developer Experience as Competitive Moat

Setup Time Comparison:

Provider Time to First Auth Friction Points
Auth0 30-60 minutes Dashboard signup, app creation, SDK installation, config, 847-page docs
Azure AD 2+ hours Premium license, Azure portal, tenant setup, app registration, permissions
IAM System 60 seconds npx iam init && npm run dev

Our 60-Second Promise:

  1. Run CLI (15s)
  2. Auto-detect framework (5s)
  3. Generate integration code (20s)
  4. Install dependencies (15s)
  5. Start dev server (5s)

Total: 60 seconds to working Face ID authentication.

3. Open Source as Business Strategy (Not Charity)

Why Open Source Wins:

  • Trust through transparency: No black boxes, full audit capability
  • Community contributions: 5x development velocity vs closed-source
  • Fork-ability: Eliminates vendor lock-in fear (Auth0's #1 complaint)
  • Security: "Many eyes make all bugs shallow" (Linus's Law)

Business Model:

  • Free tier: Self-hosted (unlimited) or managed (10K MAU)
  • Pro tier: Managed hosting with SLAs ($0.02/MAU above 10K)
  • Enterprise: Custom deployment, compliance, white-glove migration

Security Properties:

  • Phishing-resistant: Signature includes rpId (origin), cannot be replayed on fake site
  • Breach-resistant: Private key never leaves device (Secure Enclave/TPM)
  • Replay-resistant: Counter increments with each use, server rejects old counters
  • User-friendly: One tap, no passwords to remember

Tech Stack

Backend

Language: C# 12 (.NET 9) Framework: ASP.NET Core 9.0 Database: PostgreSQL 16 (or SQLite for dev) ORM: Entity Framework Core 9.0

Key Libraries:

  • Fido2NetLib - WebAuthn/FIDO2 implementation
  • System.IdentityModel.Tokens.Jwt - JWT generation/validation
  • Swashbuckle - OpenAPI/Swagger documentation
  • Serilog - Structured logging
  • Npgsql - PostgreSQL driver

Frontend SDKs

  • @iam-system/react - React hooks + components
  • @iam-system/vue - Vue 3 composables
  • @iam-system/nextjs - Next.js App Router integration
  • @iam-system/angular - Angular services + guards

All SDKs share:

  • TypeScript for type safety
  • Tree-shakeable ES modules
  • < 10KB gzipped
  • Zero dependencies (except framework peer deps)

CLI Tool

Runtime: Node.js 20+ Language: TypeScript Key Features:

  • Framework detection (analyzes package.json, project files)
  • Code generation (templates for each framework)
  • Migration tools (Auth0, Azure AD, Okta export/import)
  • Deployment automation (Docker, Kubernetes, cloud providers)

Security Architecture

Defense in Depth (5 Layers)

Layer 1: Network Security

  • TLS 1.3 only (no TLS 1.2 or below)
  • HSTS headers (force HTTPS)
  • Certificate pinning (for mobile apps)

Layer 2: Authentication

  • Passkeys (WebAuthn/FIDO2) - default
  • Magic Links (email-based, passwordless)
  • Passwords (Argon2id hashing) - legacy support only
  • MFA (TOTP, SMS) - optional

Layer 3: Authorization

  • Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
  • JWT scopes (OAuth2 standard)
  • Resource-level permissions
  • Principle of least privilege

Layer 4: Input Validation

  • Parameterized queries (prevent SQL injection)
  • Output encoding (prevent XSS)
  • CSRF tokens (state-changing operations)
  • Rate limiting (prevent brute force)

Layer 5: Audit & Monitoring

  • All authentication events logged
  • Failed login alerts (10+ attempts)
  • Anomaly detection (unusual locations/devices)
  • Real-time security dashboards

Threat Model

Threats Mitigated:

  • ✅ Phishing (passkeys include origin in signature)
  • ✅ Credential stuffing (no passwords to stuff)
  • ✅ Replay attacks (WebAuthn counter verification)
  • ✅ Man-in-the-middle (TLS 1.3 + certificate pinning)
  • ✅ Session hijacking (HttpOnly cookies + refresh token rotation)
  • ✅ SQL injection (parameterized queries)
  • ✅ XSS (Content Security Policy + output encoding)

Threats Monitored:

  • ⚠️ Zero-day vulnerabilities (bug bounty program)
  • ⚠️ DDoS attacks (rate limiting + CDN)
  • ⚠️ Social engineering (user education)

Scalability Architecture

Horizontal Scaling

Stateless API Servers:

  • No in-memory session state
  • All state in database or JWT
  • Can scale to N servers behind load balancer

Database Scaling:

  • Read replicas (for high read workloads)
  • Connection pooling (limit DB connections)
  • Caching layer (Redis for frequently accessed data)

Expected Performance:

  • 10K MAU: Single server (2 CPU, 4GB RAM)
  • 100K MAU: 3 servers + 1 read replica
  • 1M MAU: 10 servers + 3 read replicas + Redis cache

Geographic Distribution

Multi-Region Deployment:

  • US East (primary)
  • EU West (GDPR compliance)
  • Asia Pacific (low latency for Asia users)

Data Residency:

  • User data stored in user's region
  • Cross-region replication for disaster recovery
  • Backup frequency: Every 6 hours, retained 30 days

Observability & Monitoring

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Authentication latency (p50, p95, p99)

Infrastructure Metrics:

  • CPU usage (target: < 70%)
  • Memory usage (target: < 80%)
  • Database connections (target: < 80% of pool)
