📝 Walkthrough

Diva markup and CSS selectors now use diva- namespaces. Thumbnail loading supports fallback URLs and unavailable states. The build no longer scopes or suppresses Diva CSS. Cantus overrides and committed bundles now match the updated Diva integration.

Changes: Diva viewer update

Layer / File(s) Summary
Namespace Diva view markup
nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/src/View*, nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/src/viewer-element.ts, nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/build/diva.debug.js
Diva markup now uses diva--prefixed classes across modals, filters, collections, sidebars, thumbnails, status elements, and toolbars.
Namespace Diva CSS selectors
nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/src/styles/*, nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/build/diva.debug.js
Diva CSS selectors now match the namespaced markup. The app stylesheet uses .diva-app scoping and updated utility selectors.
Thumbnail fallback and viewport detection
nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/src/Model.elm, nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/src/Main.elm, nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/src/View/Sidebar.elm, nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/src/viewer-element.ts
Pages now provide fallback thumbnail URLs. Lazy thumbnails retry fallback URLs and render an unavailable placeholder after failure. Mobile detection uses viewport width.
Use the vendored stylesheet directly
nginx/app/gulpfile.mjs, nginx/app/src/js/manuscript-detail/DivaBackend.js, nginx/app/src/styles/styles.scss, nginx/static/css/cantus-min.css, nginx/static/js/app/cantus-min.js, nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/package.json, nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/testing/index.html
The build no longer creates a scoped Diva stylesheet or suppresses Diva stylesheet injection. Cantus overrides and committed bundles use the renamed classes. Folio submission passes the entered value directly. The Diva package and OpenSeadragon test dependency versions are updated.

The CSS and viewer refactor still has a concrete risk of breaking filter expand/collapse behavior, along with smaller image-loading and accessibility issues. These should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Explanation

The PR removes the stylesheet suppression hack, removes the scoped CSS build step, retargets Cantus overrides, and updates reviewable Diva bundles. However, the vendored package version is 7.4.2, while issue #999 requires v7.4.1. The committed files nginx/static/js/app/cantus.chunk.diva.min.js and its source map were excluded by path filters, so their rebuild cannot be verified.

Do not prefix the groupId argument; it is a state key, not a CSS class.

viewFilterGroup uses its second parameter only for Set.member groupId model.filterGroupExpanded (Line 526) and UserToggledFilterGroup groupId (Line 534). It never renders the value as a class. The container class is the literal "diva-filter-group" on Line 528.

Every other call site passes an unprefixed id, for example "colour-adjust" (Line 463) and "transform" (Line 1054). This call now passes "diva-filter-json", so the expand/collapse key for this group changed and no longer matches the sibling naming. The real class usage is the textarea on Line 574, which already sets HA.class "diva-filter-json".

The generated bundle carries the same value at nginx/app/dependencies/diva.js/build/diva.debug.js Line 29073, so rebuild after the fix.

Now that :root { color-scheme: light } became .diva-app { color-scheme: light } above, this rule re-declares color-scheme: light a second time on the same .diva-app selector (line 3 already sets it). Harmless since they agree, but worth collapsing into one declaration so a future edit to one block doesn't silently diverge from the other.

This file is obtained from upstream, and the duplicate is still there in v7.4.2. I'd rather not edit the vendored copy. After upstream updating it can be re-vendored to avoid the duplication.

This renames classes inside the vendored copy of diva.js (tracks the separate DDMAL/diva.js upstream per its package.json). Since the rename only lives here and not upstream, a future diva.js version bump would either silently reintroduce the old unprefixed classes or produce a merge conflict against this fork's edits. Worth confirming: is the plan to upstream this same rename to DDMAL/diva.js, or is this vendored copy meant to diverge permanently from upstream now?

All classes in Diva are now prefixed upstream. This isn’t a local change

Confirming Andrew's answer, with the detail that makes this diff confusing: the tree on main says 7.4.1 in package.json but is actually a pre-release snapshot I vendored on 2026-07-23. Upstream didn't tag v7.4.1 until 2026-08-13, and that release is what carries the prefixes.

Clear the stale unavailable placeholder before starting a new image load.

load() only guards against a duplicate load with if (this.image) return;. It does not clear this.unavailable before creating and appending a new <img>. showUnavailable() clears this.image before creating the placeholder, but no code path clears this.unavailable when load() runs again after a previous failure (for example, on a disconnectedCallback/connectedCallback cycle that re-triggers observe() without an intervening attribute change and reset() call).

If this happens, the new image element and the stale "Thumbnail unavailable" placeholder both remain in the DOM as siblings until the next attribute change forces reset().

🐛 Proposed fix
     load() {
       var _a;

Ignore stale image-load errors.

If an observed attribute changes while the old request is pending, reset() removes the old element but leaves its onerror callback active. A later error can call showUnavailable() for the old URL and remove the replacement image.

Track a load version, or verify that this.image === image, before the callback retries or shows the unavailable state.

This commit updates the vendored diva to the latest released build
(v7.4.1), which prefixes every Diva class name with "diva-". Diva
injects its stylesheet globally, so the generic names it used before
collided with Bootstrap and Cantus's own rules (.modal, .status,
.thumbs, ...). Two hacks used before now can be removed:

- DivaBackend pre-created an empty <style id="diva-inline-styles"> to
suppress Diva's global injection. Diva now injects its stylesheet
  itself again.
- bundle:css generated a #diva-wrapper-scoped copy of the vendored Diva
styles at build time and concatenated it into cantus-min.css.

Cantus's own viewer overrides in styles.scss are retargeted to the
prefixed names.
