Fix broken links in Zotero #2762

Description

@hjellinek

My automated Zotero link checker has identified a large number of items in the Interlisp collection with URLs that point at URLs that don't work: the host name doesn't resolve or the GET returns 403 or 404 errors. The bulk of the latter category are documents in the ACM Digital Library. I have been in touch with the ACM DL staff about those, so we'll only deal with the non-ACM items with this issue.

I've attached a spreadsheet produced by the link checker. The two tabs (sheets) to investigate are "Failed connection" (sites that no longer respond) and "Browser non-2xx" (the sites respond but the links return an error code. The Doc ID column links to the item in Zotero on the web. The URL column shows the sequence of redirections, starting with the URL in Zotero and ending with the URL that returned the error code.

For example,

Doc ID Title URL HTTP Status
MSPJNWAV Performance and Evaluation of LISP Systems https://direct.mit.edu/books/book/3870/performance-and-evaluation-of-lisp-systems 307
https://direct.mit.edu/books/book/3870/performance-and-evaluation-of-lisp-systems 403

It's possible that a human sitting in front of a Web browser might succeed with some that the automated checker couldn't access. Add a column to the spreadsheet to mark those and attach the new spreadsheet to this issue when you're done.

The goal is to replace the URL in each affected Zotero item with one that works. As a secondary goal, if we don't already have a copy of the document in Zotero, download and attach one (if rights permit).

    The ACM Digital Library's move to "Open Access", which is NOT "open" is a lie. I dropped my ACM DL subscription when they announced it would be "Open Access", and I think will drop ACM membership next renewal.

    Working on this now; came across one of the videos (the Trillium one, specifically). Since this is one of the ones I uploaded to YouTube and cut a whole lot nicer, and the current URL (which resolves fine, by the by) points only to tape 2 of 2, I'm thinking I should change the URL to the YouTube one. The description of the video links back to the IA original, anyway. I'll do that for now, but if for some reason that seems like a bad idea, let me know.

    Can you provide the ID of the Zotero item and the URLs you're referring to?

    @Eleanor-Young

    Title: Trillium: A Design Environment for Copier Interfaces: The System and Its Impact on Design, Tape 2 of 2
    ID: MLJCUYRS
    URL: https://archive.org/details/xerox-parc_V-06

    There's, of course, a Tape 1 of 2 entry as well. Comes up if you just search "Trillium".
    I'm currently thinking to change to the YouTube URL on one of them and delete the other. It's one 'item' really, though split across two tapes. So long as the fact it's two tapes isn't lost somehow, it should probably be one entry in the bibliography.

    Here's the completed spreadsheet. I was able to fix / replace all but a couple of the genuinely broken links, verified the rest were good. I haven't gone through with that change I mentioned in my above comment, will do once I get some confirmation that it seems reasonable to someone other than myself 👍

    A single bibliography entry for the video, as opposed to one for each tape, makes sense. Feel free to do that.

    Can you attach the video file itself to the Zotero item?

    Thanks for doing that. The number of links that turned out to be valid shows that I need to come up with a way to prevent the link checker from revisiting sites that we manually verified as OK. I need to think about this.... Maybe I can store a "last verified" date somewhere, maybe in a local database (not ideal), maybe in Zotero itself, and exempt a link from automated verification for some period of time after it was last verified.
