fix(python): name the rejected rrf_k value and accept numpy integers (#1096) - #1100
#1096 was filed against #1066's earlier head, where build_query did int(retrieval.rrf_k): -0.5 became a legal-looking 0, 2.5 became 2, and nan raised a bare ValueError from protobuf. #1048 (0f89c2a3d) already replaced that with a check that rejects non-integers before serializing. This PR closes the remaining gaps the issue names:
The error names the value the caller passed (... rrf_k must be an int, got -0.5, 2.5, nan) instead of its type, so nobody is told about a laundered 0.
Integral types are accepted, numpy integers included (numpy is a package dependency), via numbers.Integral, then cast.
Range stays in commons. A negative integer such as -5 is not coerced; it reaches the native validator, which rejects it naming rrf_k. Bounds are not duplicated in the binding, the same split the other SDKs use.
Tests
bindings/python/tests/test_rag.py: -0.5, 2.5, nan, int32 overflow and an unknown vector_store each raise an SDKException whose message names the field and value, and nothing is sent. A numpy.int64rrf_k reaches the proto. Local: RAG tests 26 passed; whole Python suite 467 passed (the only failure, test_version_string, needs the package installed).
Stacking
Stacked on #1048 (the Python validation lives there), so the diff includes its commits until it merges.
Fixes Python RAG rrf_k handling so rejected values are named correctly and numpy integers are accepted. Previously int() laundered -0.5 into 0, 2.5 into 2, and let nan surface as a bare protobuf ValueError; now non-integral or non-finite values are rejected before serialization with the value the caller passed in the error, and integral types including numpy integers are accepted. Range checks stay in commons, the same split the other SDKs use.
The diff also includes commits from the stacked branches this PR sits on (#1048, #913, #1019), which add the BM25, RRF, and vector-store retrieval knobs to the core backend and all bindings.
Written for commit 113c1f0. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added per-query controls for BM25 ranking parameters and reciprocal rank fusion across Kotlin, Python, Swift, and web SDKs.
Added USearch vector-store selection for retrieval. Omitted options continue to use session defaults.
Custom retrieval settings now affect BM25 scoring and rank-fusion results.
Bug Fixes
Added validation for retrieval settings, including numeric ranges and vector-store selections, so invalid or unsupported inputs are rejected.
RAG retrieval options now include BM25 parameters, an RRF constant, and vector-store selection. SDK bindings serialize and validate these options. The core validates and applies them in retrieval. The engine-backed retrieve operator also parses, validates, and forwards retrieval parameters.
The protocol and SDKs add BM25 and RRF overrides and vector-store selection. The schema version advances to 1.7.0.
SDK query mapping and validation bindings/kotlin/..., bindings/python/..., bindings/swift/..., bindings/web/...
Query paths map the new options into retrieval requests. Binding tests cover option serialization, integer-range checks, and invalid Python inputs.
Core validation and ranking core/src/features/rag/..., core/tests/test_advanced_modality_proto_abi.cpp, core/tests/test_rag_fusion.cpp
The core validates tuning values and vector-store selection, passes session defaults and query overrides through the retrieval graph, and applies them in BM25 search and rank fusion. Tests cover validation and score changes.
The retrieve operator validates numeric parameters and vector-store selection, then forwards accepted settings. Float parameters use locale-independent formatting. Tests cover formatting and rejected values.
Explicit zero-valued retrieval settings may be ignored, and extreme BM25 inputs produce the wrong public exception; these should be corrected before merge.

Explanation
Issue [#1096] requires clear SDK errors for invalid rrf_k values and automated coverage. _int32_option rejects non-integral values before protobuf serialization, names the caller value, accepts numbers.Integral values such as numpy.int64, and checks int32 overflow before casting. The tests cover -0.5, 2.5, nan, overflow, no-send behavior, and the NumPy path. Negative integer range validation remains in commons, so the binding does not coerce it.

Preserve an explicit bm25_b: 0 override.
RAGConfig.bm25_b is a non-optional proto3 scalar, so an explicit zero is indistinguishable from absence. The loader accepts zero, but solution_converter.cpp drops it because it only forwards values greater than zero. The retrieve operator then omits the query override, causing the RAG backend to use the session bm25_b instead of zero. Make the field optional and forward its presence.

Update the RAGConfig declaration for bm25_b to preserve proto3 field presence,
then change the forwarding check in the solution converter to use that presence
so an explicit zero reaches retrieve params.

Thanks for this, @Adityakk9031! The fix lands exactly where issue #1096 pointed: _int32_option now names the value the caller actually passed — RagRetrievalOptions.rrf_k must be an int, got -0.5 rather than a type, and instead of reporting a laundered 0 — integral types including numpy integers are accepted through numbers.Integral, the int32 bounds check stays, and the tests pin -0.5, 2.5, nan, 2**31 and the numpy path while asserting nothing was sent. Leaving the range check in commons rather than duplicating it per SDK is the right split.
This one is on a maintainer hold, and nothing about it is a judgement on your code:
One thing that is yours, and it blocks the merge today:
The PR no longer merges.main moved to 679a5b742 and fix(bindings): forward the six RAG generation knobs from Electron and Python (#1082) #1088 landed on bindings/python/tests/test_rag.py at the same insertion point your new test uses (:244 there, :245 here), so git reports a conflict in that one file — everything else, including _rag_bridge.py, auto-merges. Please merge main in (or rebase) and keep both sides' tests; CI's green board ran on the old base, so it needs to re-run once you push. There's a matching review note on #1093 and #1098 if it's the same conflict for you there.
One optional thing in the same function, worth doing while you're in it:
bindings/python/runanywhere/_rag_bridge.py:140 and :172 still call int() on top_k, so a fractional top_k is truncated, a negative one becomes 0 and is dropped by rag_backend.cpp:590's > 0 gate, and a nan raises a bare ValueError from protobuf — the same class you just fixed for rrf_k. _int32_option("top_k", ...) at both sites is the one-liner. Entirely up to you, and not needed for this PR.
Backing data: CodeRabbit reviewed 3ef80c93b, CI is green at that commit, and the two independent reviews agreed the Python change itself is complete and correct against #1096.
Not blocking this PR: I opened #{issue} for a rag.query / rag.search rejected for a bad rrf_k publishing no telemetry event — you're welcome to pick it up if you're interested.
Once the rebase is in we'll take another look. Thanks again!

Preserve presence for zero-valued retrieval settings. Validation accepts bm25_k1 = 0 and rrf_k = 0, but the session and backend paths use > 0 to decide whether to apply them. A caller’s accepted zero silently becomes a default. Use presence flags rather than zero sentinels, and test both zero values through retrieval.

Convert float overflow to SDKException.
If a caller sets bm25_k1 or bm25_b to 10**400, the type check accepts the integer, but float(value) raises OverflowError. RagSession.query passes that exception to the caller unchanged. Catch the overflow and raise SDKException.invalid_input with the field and value. As per coding guidelines, “Raise SDKException (via its factories) only — never a bare Exception on the public surface.” (docs.python.org)

#1096 was filed against #1066's earlier head, where
build_querydidint(retrieval.rrf_k):-0.5became a legal-looking0,2.5became2, andnanraised a bareValueErrorfrom protobuf. #1048 (0f89c2a3d) already replaced that with a check that rejects non-integers before serializing. This PR closes the remaining gaps the issue names:... rrf_k must be an int, got -0.5,2.5,nan) instead of its type, so nobody is told about a laundered0.numbers.Integral, then cast.-5is not coerced; it reaches the native validator, which rejects it namingrrf_k. Bounds are not duplicated in the binding, the same split the other SDKs use.Tests
bindings/python/tests/test_rag.py:-0.5,2.5,nan, int32 overflow and an unknownvector_storeeach raise anSDKExceptionwhose message names the field and value, and nothing is sent. Anumpy.int64rrf_kreaches the proto. Local: RAG tests 26 passed; whole Python suite 467 passed (the only failure,test_version_string, needs the package installed).Stacking
Stacked on #1048 (the Python validation lives there), so the diff includes its commits until it merges.
Closes #1096
Summary by cubic
Fixes Python RAG
rrf_khandling so rejected values are named correctly and numpy integers are accepted. Previouslyint()laundered-0.5into0,2.5into2, and letnansurface as a bare protobufValueError; now non-integral or non-finite values are rejected before serialization with the value the caller passed in the error, and integral types including numpy integers are accepted. Range checks stay in commons, the same split the other SDKs use.The diff also includes commits from the stacked branches this PR sits on (#1048, #913, #1019), which add the BM25, RRF, and vector-store retrieval knobs to the core backend and all bindings.
