What

The session config bounds top_k and score_threshold, but the per-query path (rag.query and rag.search) copied them straight through. A score_threshold outside 0...1 or NaN, or a negative top_k, was used as-is or silently fell back to the default, so retrieval mis-ranked with no error.

Both entry points now reject those values with RAC_ERROR_INVALID_ARGUMENT, through one validate_retrieval_bounds helper beside the BM25/RRF check.

One deliberate deviation from the issue: top_k == 0 stays valid, meaning "use the session default". The web SDK already sends topK: 0 for an unset value and documents it that way, so rejecting zero would break callers. Only negative top_k is an error.

Not done: the issue's third item (range annotations on the four proto fields). That is a schema change that also touches idl/VERSION and SCHEMA_LOCK, which are already being sequenced across the stack, so it is left for that step.

Verification

  • test_advanced_modality_proto_abi: all new checks pass (negative top_k, score_threshold 1.5, NaN score_threshold, and top_k 0 accepted). The only failures are the two existing Windows VLM model-path checks, which fail the same way without this change.
  • test_rag_fusion: 14 checks, 0 failures.

Stacking

Stacked on #1066 (fix/web-rag-knobs-cross-wasm-provider-1057), which sits on #1048 → #1017. The diff includes those commits until they merge.

Closes #1102

Summary by cubic

Per-query RAG retrieval (rag.query and rag.search) now bounds top_k and score_threshold like the session config, so a negative top_k or a score_threshold outside 0...1 (or NaN) is rejected with RAC_ERROR_INVALID_ARGUMENT instead of silently mis-ranking results. The PR also threads BM25, RRF, and vector-store knobs through the whole stack.

  • top_k == 0 stays the "use the session default" sentinel that every SDK already sends.
  • BM25 (bm25_k1, bm25_b), RRF (rrf_k), and vector_store are validated at the ABI boundary and wired into session config, per-query overrides, the retrieve backend, and all SDK bindings (Kotlin, Python, Swift, Web).
  • The retrieve operator parses floats with the classic locale and rejects malformed params; the converter formats floats the same way so they round-trip.
  • The Web cross-WASM RAG provider rejects the native-only knobs with an error instead of silently ignoring them.
  • VECTOR_STORE_USEARCH is whitelisted on-device; PGVECTOR returns NOT_SUPPORTED and unknown enum values return INVALID_ARGUMENT.
  • The VectorStore enum moved from solutions.proto to rag.proto and IDL_VERSION bumped to 1.7.0; proto range annotations on the new fields are left for a separate schema change.

Written for commit f1a2920. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • RAG retrieval options now support per-query BM25 tuning, reciprocal-rank-fusion tuning, and USEARCH vector-store selection across Kotlin, Python, Swift, and Web SDKs.
    • Retrieval settings can be customized at the session level, with per-query overrides where supported. Omitted options continue to use session defaults.
    • Ranking results are more consistent when candidates have equal scores.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid retrieval settings are rejected with errors instead of being silently accepted or misinterpreted.
    • Cross-WASM queries report an error when given native-only retrieval options.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds vector-store selection and BM25/RRF tuning to RAG configuration and per-query options. Core retrieval applies those settings during scoring and validates retrieval inputs. Kotlin, Python, Swift, and Web SDKs expose and map the options; Cross-WASM rejects unsupported overrides.

The RAG schema and SDK option types add vector-store selection and optional BM25/RRF retrieval settings. The IDL version and schema lock are updated.

The ABI validates vector-store choices, retrieval bounds, and tuning parameters. The engine-backed retrieve operator strictly parses its settings. Float parameters use locale-independent formatting. Tests cover accepted and rejected values.

The SDKs map retrieval overrides into requests. Swift propagates option-conversion errors. Cross-WASM rejects native-only overrides; binding tests cover mapping and rejection behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f1a29

Explicit topK=0 bypasses the stated minimum and silently uses the session default; unset Web values need to remain absent while explicit zero is rejected. Malformed Python option values can select USEARCH, and a short RRF result can trigger out-of-bounds access in tests. Resolve or explicitly accept these localized risks before merging.

Explanation

The description explains the changes and verification results, but it does not follow the repository template. Required sections such as Type of Change, checklist items, labels, and screenshots are missing.

Resolution

Update the description to use the repository template. Add the Description, Type of Change, Testing, Labels, Checklist, and Screenshots sections. Mark applicable checkboxes, identify relevant SDK and Commons labels, and state when screenshots or platform-specific testing are not applicable.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1102 requires per-query rejection of top_k < 1 and score_threshold outside 0.0...1.0 on both query and search paths. The reviewed code adds shared validation, and the tests cover negative top_k, invalid thresholds, NaN, and accepted top_k == 0. However, top_k == 0 remains accepted, which does not meet the issue requirement. The requested range annotations on the new proto fields are also absent in idl/rag.proto.

Resolution

Reject top_k == 0 in both per-query paths and update the regression test. Add the range annotations required by #1102 to the specified proto fields, then update generated schema artifacts and schema metadata as required.

Explanation

The reviewed change includes BM25 and RRF tuning, vector-store enum and backend behavior, retrieve-operator parsing, and Kotlin, Python, Swift, and Web SDK changes. Issue #1102 covers per-query top_k and score_threshold validation, its regression test, and the specified proto annotations. The additional changes are not required to implement those objectives.

Resolution

Split the BM25/RRF, vector-store, operator, and SDK changes into their linked work. Keep this pull request limited to the #1102 validation, tests, and proto annotations.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject values that are not RagVectorStore members.

When a caller passes True or 1.0, RagVectorStore(value) resolves the value to USEARCH. RagSession.query then sends the override instead of raising SDKException.invalid_input. Check isinstance(value, RagVectorStore) before conversion.

As per coding guidelines, “Validate all external inputs (URLs, archive members, secure keys, model ids).”

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard the score indexing behind the size check.

The CHECK macro records a failure but does not stop execution. If f_def or f_low has fewer than two results, Lines 101-102 index out of bounds and cause undefined behavior. A real regression can then crash the test instead of reporting a failure. The BM25 block above already uses a sized guard. Use the same pattern here.

P2: An explicit bm25_k1 = 0 or rrf_k = 0 passes validation but is silently replaced by the session value. The validator treats 0 as legal, so the override is ignored without any error. Use presence flags like has_similarity_threshold, or reject 0 in validation. Then add a test for the explicit-zero case.

Based on your team's feedback about preserving option presence.

core/src/features/rag/rac_rag_proto_abi.cpp:374-392
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject explicit topK = 0 and omit an unset topK.

RAGRetrievalOptions.top_k is optional but requires a minimum of 1. The Web builders currently convert an omitted value to 0, and ts-proto preserves a defined optional scalar as present on the wire. Therefore, both an explicit topK = 0 and an omitted topK can reach the ABI as present zero. The ABI accepts zero and silently uses the session default, which violates issue #1102 and the proto contract.

Reject values below 1. Do not encode zero when the caller omitted topK.
