Description

Makes the compact Profile navigation responsive, with one page title owned by the profile. Supersedes #10008, which this branch includes: #10008 opened the compact tablist in a popover from each page's own title, and needed several headless Popover additions and a page-title registry to do it. Picking pages from a Select (React Spectrum's TabsPicker approach) removes that machinery, so the headless Popover stays as it is on main.

Layouts

The root's sentinel reports three layouts (1px column, 2px select, 3px sheet), so both breakpoints stay in CSS.

  • Wide: the nav column, unchanged.
  • Compact on a viewport of 40rem or more (a narrow container on a tablet or desktop, or the full-screen profile dialog between 40rem and 48rem): the page title is a Select trigger with an sm caret on its x-height, and the nav items are its options in a listbox under the title.
  • Phone (viewport < 40rem): the page title opens a Drawer holding the tablist, sized to its content. Arrowing through it does not switch the page behind it (manual activation).

Open state is tied to the layout it was opened in, so crossing a breakpoint never mounts the other presentation already open.

Page title

  • Profile.Content renders the page title (h3 under the profile's h2, cl-profile-page-title) at the top of the content body, so it scrolls with the page. Its text is the selected Profile.NavItem's label, and it names every ContentPanel.
  • Panel.Title renders nothing inside a Profile.ContentPanel, and a ref on it reaches the page title instead, so pages that send focus to their title keep working. On its own, Panel.Title renders as before.
  • While compact, a ContentPanel is role="group" with no tabIndex, named by the title, like Spectrum's CollapsedTabPanel, so no tabpanel is left without a tablist.

Select decisions

  • The options are the Profile.Nav children: Nav passes them to the root in a layout effect, and the title renders them again under a mode context, so NavItem renders a Tabs.Tab, a Select.Option, or its label. Only the title (heading, trigger and popup) sits under Select.Root, so page dialogs and menus never nest in its floating tree.
  • alignItemWithTrigger={false}: the options are sm rows under a 2xl title, so an overlay would cover the title without lining up. The listbox drops below the title.
  • Root, trigger and options are the headless parts; the surface is Mosaic's Select.Popup. Mosaic's Select.Root needs string labels, its trigger is a form-field Button with its own chevron, and its option has no icon or badge. Options keep the nav item styles (fills on hover and focus-visible, the focused item above the selected one), with the Select option's flush focus ring so the popup does not crop it.
  • A combobox takes no name from its content, so the trigger is aria-labelledby a label span inside the title. The panels point at the same span.
  • The phone keeps the Drawer and tablist: a bottom sheet with large targets suits a phone better than a floating listbox. The drawer has no trigger, so finalFocus returns focus to the title's button.

Known gaps

  • The title text arrives in a layout effect, so server-rendered HTML has an empty page title until hydration.
  • Listbox typeahead uses a nav item's children when they are a string, and its value otherwise (custom pages with a node label).
  • In the sheet, the tabs' aria-controls point at panels that are now groups.

The compact profile nav opens in a popover under the page title on viewports of 40rem and wider,
and in a content-height drawer below that. The title caret takes the standard `sm` icon size.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Profile navigation now uses column, select, and sheet layouts based on sentinel width. Profile content renders a shared page title that labels the selected page, and Panel.Title refers to that title when nested in profile content. Tests and stories cover the layouts, heading semantics, and focus behavior. Popover comments and Changesets files were also updated.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f6cd2

Consumers relying on a navigation-item ref cannot use it in the select layout. This is a bounded compatibility issue to fix before merge or accept explicitly.

Forward Profile.NavItem refs through the select option.

In select mode, the label copy renders text only, so the popup option is the only interactive copy. NavItem currently forwards its ref only to Tabs.Tab. SelectPrimitive.Option renders a button, but it must also merge the external ref before NavItem passes it. Passing ref={ref} alone is not sufficient because SelectOption currently supplies only its internal refs to useRender.
