Summary

Isolate each checkout's dev container

Detailed description

  • A shared container name could attach one checkout to another checkout's bind mount.
  • Name containers per checkout, stop when Arena or nested Isaac Lab is uninitialized, and warn when either is off its pinned commit.
  • Stop when the image was not built from the checkout's Docker inputs. -r rebuilds, -u rebuilds only on a mismatch, and -s uses the image anyway. CI passes -u.
  • Existing images have no input label, so the first launch after this change needs -r (CI rebuilds through -u). The launcher prints the container name.

Test plan

  • From two checkouts, confirm ./docker/run_docker.sh uses different container names and does not exec into the other checkout.
  • With an uninitialized Arena submodule, confirm the launcher exits before Docker and prints git submodule update --init --recursive.
  • Rebuild once with -r, then confirm a later launch with matching inputs proceeds without a message.
  • Change a Docker input or submodule commit and confirm the next launch stops; -s proceeds with a warning and -u rebuilds.
  • CI rebuilds the runner's unlabeled image through -u and passes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added -u to rebuild a Docker image when it does not match the current checkout, and -s to use a mismatched image anyway. The existing -r and -R options still force a rebuild.
    • Docker container names now vary by checkout, reducing conflicts between separate checkouts.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Docker startup reports an error when required submodules are unavailable or an image does not match the checkout. It also warns when submodules differ from their pinned commits.
    • Startup reports an error if a running container is still using the previous image.

📝 Walkthrough

The Docker launcher identifies checkouts, checks submodule status, and compares image fingerprints with current build inputs. It supports rebuilding or using an image with a different fingerprint. The quickstart documentation and CI test invocation reflect these options.

Changes: Docker image checkout matching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Checkout identity and submodule checks
docker/run_docker.sh
Container names include the checkout directory and a repository-path hash. The launcher exits if submodule status cannot be read or a submodule is uninitialized. It warns if a submodule differs from its pinned commit.
Fingerprint-based image handling
docker/run_docker.sh, docs/pages/quickstart/installation.rst, scripts/ci/run_tests.sh
The launcher fingerprints Docker build inputs and labels built images with the fingerprint. On a mismatch, -u rebuilds, -s allows use of the existing image with a warning, and neither option causes an error. The documentation describes the options and related update behavior. The CI test invocation passes -u.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ff115

With uncommitted Arena or Isaac Lab changes, the launcher can reuse an image whose build-time installs do not reflect the checkout; forcing a rebuild avoids this. The limitation is bounded, so merging is possible with awareness of the workaround.

fingerprint calculation in the run_docker flow so failures from sha256sum or

When would you want to proceed anyway? Should this default to fail?

Agreed, it now fails by default in 71a2024. Proceeding is only reasonable in a few cases: images built before this change (no label), a second checkout pinning different submodule commits that share the tag, edits to fingerprinted files that do not change dependencies, or working offline. -s covers those with a warning. -u rebuilds only on a mismatch, and scripts/ci/run_tests.sh passes it so runners rebuild instead of failing, including the first run after this lands.
