What problem does this PR solve?

DM configuration logs can expose passwords/TLS contents, and worker diagnostics omit sensitive data redaction.

Issue Number: ref #12116, ref #11489

The engine CreateWorker path in #12116 is outside this PR.

What is changed and how it works?

  • Mask passwords/TLS contents in configuration request logs and clear TLS contents from get-config exports, retaining ordinary fields and original runtime configuration.
  • Extend the existing worker redact-info-log option to SQL/DDL, row data, errors, and status responses without changing execution or retry decisions.

Storage/proxy URL credential fixes and the TiDB dependency update are in #12902. Master business-data redaction and DEBUG/failpoint call-site changes are deferred.

Check List

Tests

GONOPROXY=none GOPROXY=https://proxy.golang.org GOMAXPROCS=2 go test -mod=readonly -p=1 -parallel=1 ./dm/pkg/log ./dm/pb -run 'Test(Redact|Redaction|SQL|YAMLRequest|SubtaskRequest|InvalidRequest|ConfigLog)' -count=1
git diff --check

Full integration tests were not run locally.

Questions

Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?

No new option; worker redaction remains off by default. Passwords/TLS are always masked, configuration formatting may change, and enabled redaction hides error/DDL text in status responses. Replication and retry behavior are unchanged. Logging adds filtering/copying overhead; no benchmark was run.

Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?

Documentation changes are deferred; this PR uses the existing worker option.

Release note

Fix password and TLS content exposure in DM configuration diagnostics and incomplete sensitive data redaction in worker logs and status responses.

📝 Walkthrough

DM adds configurable redaction for request configurations, diagnostic log fields, errors, proxy credentials, TLS data, and worker status. Redaction helpers preserve selected diagnostic information and operate on copied request or status data. Several Go module requirements also advance to newer commits.

Changes: DM Log Redaction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Redaction controls and logger setup
dm/master/config.go, dm/master/dm-master.toml, cmd/dm-master/main.go, cmd/dm-worker/main.go, dm/pkg/log/*
The master configuration adds redact-info-log, defaulting to false. Both processes apply the setting before logger initialization. Logger helpers redact selected fields, configuration values, and errors.
Request and status redaction
dm/pb/hide_password.go, dm/pb/redact_status.go, dm/worker/server.go, dm/worker/status.go
Request marshalers redact copied YAML and TOML configurations, SQL lists, and schema strings. Worker status responses and request error messages are redacted when enabled.
Diagnostic log redaction
dm/checker/checker.go, dm/pkg/conn/*, dm/pkg/parser/common.go, dm/pkg/shardddl/optimism/lock.go, dm/master/shardddl/*, dm/syncer/*
DM wraps SQL, DDL, row, key, shard-operation, and validation fields with redaction helpers. Query and execution behavior remains unchanged in the summarized changes.
Configuration and credential handling
dm/master/server.go, dm/config/security/*, dm/pkg/utils/*, dm/dumpling/dumpling.go, dm/loader/lightning.go, dm/worker/source_worker.go
Master configuration responses clone database settings before clearing sensitive data. Proxy logging redacts URL credentials, TLS clearing removes Base64 fields, and component configuration logs use redaction-aware formatting.
Documentation and fixtures
dm/docs/log-redaction.md, dm/tests/dmctl_basic/conf/get_master1.toml
Documentation describes the setting, masked and retained data, and redaction limits. A test configuration sets the option to false.
Module requirements
go.mod
The TiDB, TiDB parser, and TiKV client-go requirements advance to newer commits.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 94dfa

Supported S3 task requests can still expose embedded credentials in logs, so this gap should be fixed before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 94dfa

The change strengthens sensitive-data handling and preserves live credentials through copy-based sanitization. Protection still depends on configuring each process, and coverage of all diagnostic paths and dependency changes remains incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant confidentiality boundary is sensitive configuration, SQL, row values, and error details reaching diagnostic readers. Enforcement spans shared process loggers and worker status output, so protection is broader than one task but remains independently configured per process.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Worker status is sanitized before crossing to the master, preventing the inspected nested diagnostic fields from being re-logged there even when the master has a different redaction setting. The logger wrapper protects selected structured fields, not arbitrary message text.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Sanitization does not replace internal error objects: log formatting returns a string, and status masking operates on protobuf clones. The process policy uses atomic reads and writes. Source tests cover repeated and concurrent status-query ownership, although no tests were executed in this review.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — As follow-up hardening, sanitize credential-bearing storage URLs in diagnostic configuration representations, including scalar dir values, without changing the operational URL or stored configuration.

Redact credentials inside storage URIs.

A valid task can put secret_access_key in the S3 URI at loaders.global.dir. The dir key does not match isSensitiveConfigField, so redactConfigFields leaves the URI intact. The request marshaler then writes that credential to the log. Redact credential-bearing URI parameters without removing the diagnostic path. Add a request-log test with a credentialed dir. This is a valid remaining exposure. DM-owned dump-path logging was explicitly excluded from this PR's agreed scope, so the request's dir is still unchanged. The TiDB bump fixes the embedded Dumpling/Lightning paths, not this DM request field; the PR description calls out that boundary. I'm leaving this finding open rather than treating it as covered.

@joechenrh Thanks for clarifying the scope. The finding remains valid and open. The TiDB bump does not cover credential exposure through the DM request’s dir field.

Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for DM-owned dump-path redaction?
