Running Jacobin

Andrew Binstock edited this page Sep 25, 2026 · 1 revision

Build

Copy the Jacobin GitHub project to a local directory, go to the /src directory and type go build That command will pull in all dependencies and create an executable file. (As of v. 0.9.x, the executable is roughly 12MB in size and includes the JVM and many JDK libraries ported to go.)

Set up the JDK libraries

Jacobin relies on the libraries that ship with JDK from your favorite Java distribution. If you don't have a JDK installed on your system, do so now. We generally test with the open-source version of Oracle's OpenJDK, which is available under the Eclipse Adoptium project here. We currently support Java 21 or earlier.

Set up environment variables

Jacobin needs to know where the JDK libraries can be found. Create an environment varialbe named JAVA_HOME and set it to the path immediately above the JDK's \bin directory. On our test Windows machine, that path is: C:\Program Files\Eclipse Adoptium\jdk-21.0.7.6-hotspot\

Run

Run jacobin -version to get the latest version info, and jacobin -help to see the various command-line options.

Fair warning: Don't use Jacobin for production. We know there are missing features and we're actively working on them. However, if you try it out and run into difficulties, feel free to let us know in our Issues page and we'll respond as best we can.
