Judge a Push Against the Repository and Branches It Actually Writes - #3316
Conversation
The write guard now resolves the remote a push names, or the one a bare push takes from --repo, pushRemote, remote.pushDefault, or the branch's remote, to the repository its push URL names, and reads that repository's branch rules beside the origin's. A local path counts as undetermined, which denies only a protected default. In the checkout the push runs in, it also reads the branches a push writes there: push.default=matching and a lone colon as every local branch with a same-named remote-tracking ref, a pattern as each branch it maps a local ref to, --all and --mirror as every local branch, and persisted remote.<name>.push refspecs, plus push.default=upstream for a source-only refspec. A read that fails denies with an explicit refspec as the workaround. Rule 6 now fails closed on cd -, a ~- or ~+ tilde word, and a pushd or popd stack index, since the hook cannot see the shell's previous directory. Check a protected default before any other branch a push writes, so a hung rules query cannot hold a develop denial behind other branches. Carry a remote.<name>.push mapping's + into the branch it maps to as a force. Fail closed on a branch-list read where a command before the push may move a ref. Share one owner/repo URL pattern, one refspec parser, and one cd argument scan, and merge rule 6's dot-dot and directory-stack checks into one block. Both agent-safety READMEs now say that a pattern, a lone colon, --all, or --mirror push is denied after a command that may move a ref, since the hook lists the branches before that command runs. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Review effort: Lite
A push target starting with a drive letter and a colon, such as C:x/y, is now read as a local path, as Git for Windows reads it, so it leaves the push's rules undetermined rather than naming a repository. Both READMEs now state the commands after which a branch-list push fails closed as the code reads them, and the Claude README names --repo among a bare push's remote sources. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The drive-relative self-test case now names the origin's own repository, which the earlier scp-like reading allowed, so it fails without the drive-letter fix. Both READMEs now name the commands after which a branch-list push fails closed as the code reads them: a gh command, a wrapper shell, or any git subcommand outside those that leave HEAD and the push config alone. Answers to the findings this pull request's body lists under "Remaining findings from the local review" (4). They come from the recorded local strict-review passes, which open no thread:
Each issue carries a constructed reproduction. Fixing any of them here would narrow a denial this pull request adds, which this lane files rather than changes. |

Rule 6 now reads a bare pushd or popd as a directory the shell takes from its stack, as it already reads cd - and an indexed pushd. A push's --repo value is now read where the option is cut short, as in --rep=<remote>, the way git reads it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Answer to the finding the body now lists from the sixth local strict-review pass (1 new, 5 listed in all): gh-write-guard.py, _cd_argument / _cd_dir_stack, where a pushd or popd word ending a command is read as a bare stack move wherever it sits: Deferred to #3319, with a constructed reproduction. The four listed earlier keep the answers already posted (#3314, #3315, #3317, #3318). |

Answer to Copilot's P1 at gh-write-guard.py:5593, "Treat drive-relative Windows paths as local paths", whose thread was resolved before a reply landed: Fixed in cebdf13. A target starting with a drive letter and a colon is now read as a local path, so its rules count as undetermined. 0634b28 tightened the self-test row to a target the old reading allowed, so the row fails without the fix. The Linux side of the same match is filed as #3317. |
…moke Stub Pin Bump to Main (#3321) ## Summary Promotes these pull requests from develop. - [#3316](#3316): the write guard judges a push against the repository and branches it actually writes, covering a push to another remote and a bare push under `push.default=matching`. - [#3313](#3313): pins the catalog caller snippets and their documented copies to release 2.0.1122, a release whose task workflows declare every input the snippets pass, `enable_release_asset` included. - [#3323](#3323): runs the write guard's self-test with the repository-location variables cleared, so a run from a git hook no longer writes into or reads from the hook's own repository. Summary
Closes the write guard's push-target gaps from #3048, #3053, and part of #2943. Each new reading fails closed, and none narrows an existing deny.
pushurl, pushInsteadOf, andinsteadOfincluded. A push naming no remote takes its remote from--repo, the branch'spushRemote, remote.pushDefault, or the branch'sremote, in git's order. A URL that names no repository, such as a local path, leaves the push's rules undetermined. That denies only a protected default.push.default=matching. A bare push undermatchingis now read as every local branch with a same-named remote-tracking ref, each checked against the rules. It fails closed, naming an explicit refspec as the fix, where that set cannot be determined, as for a matching push to a URL.remote.<name>.pushrefspecs as if the command named them. A source-only refspec is read as the destination aremote.<name>.pushrefspec maps it to, carrying that refspec's+as a force. Underpush.default=upstreamit is also read as itsbranch.<name>.merge.:matches. A pattern refspec is now read as each branch it maps a local ref to, and a lone:as each matching branch, so a branch under a non-default ruleset such asrelease/*is checked.--allis read as every local branch, and--mirroras every local and remote-tracking branch. With--prune, the remote-tracking branches a pattern or:matches are read as deleted.cd -/cd ~-. Rule 6 now fails closed on a directory the shell reads from its directory stack.
