What

ClusterActivation.tensor_data was unbounded and the declared seq_len/hidden_size come from the same untrusted message, so ParseFromArray would allocate an oversized activation in full before any validation could reject it (up to protobuf's ~2 GB limit).

  • RAC_CONNECT_MAX_CLUSTER_ACTIVATION_BYTES (256 MiB) in rac_connect.h caps one serialized ClusterActivation.
  • rac_connect_cluster_validate_activation_proto checks request_size against it before parse_message, returning RAC_SUCCESS with a typed accepted = false validation (the same shape as every other activation rejection) without touching the payload.
  • The ceiling is stated in the idl/connect.proto contract next to the message and in the header doc.

Tests

core/tests/test_connect_proto_abi.cpp 11c: a request one byte over the ceiling is rejected with a "ceiling" reason. Only the length is consulted before parsing, so a 1-byte buffer stands in for the oversized message and the test does not allocate 256 MiB.

Notes

The receive path in #1071 (#1053) is the natural second place for this check once it lands; this keeps the commons entry point safe regardless of transport. Stacked on #723 (the activation validator lives there), so the diff includes #723's commits until it merges; idl/SCHEMA_LOCK regenerated for the comment change.

Closes #1078

Summary by cubic

Adds the local AI cluster orchestration API (rac_connect_cluster_start_proto, join, stop, validate_activation_proto) and rejects ClusterActivation messages over 256 MiB before parsing them, so an oversized tensor_data is never allocated from an untrusted payload. Previously ParseFromArray would allocate the full activation up to protobuf's ~2 GB limit before validation ran, and the declared seq_len/hidden_size come from the same untrusted message so they cannot bound it.

  • Start validates peer assignments and contiguous, gap-free layer ranges; join checks the peer's assigned span against its advertised max_layers; stop tears down the active cluster.
  • The ceiling (RAC_CONNECT_MAX_CLUSTER_ACTIVATION_BYTES) is checked against request_size before parsing and returns the same typed accepted = false validation as every other activation rejection.
  • The test covers a request one byte over the ceiling using a 1-byte buffer, so it does not allocate 256 MiB.

Written for commit b591579. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for starting, joining, and stopping local clusters, with checks for peer assignments, contiguous layer ranges, and compatible cluster settings.
    • Added cluster activation validation for active clusters, layer assignments, tensor dimensions, and minimum data size. Serialized activation requests larger than 256 MiB are rejected before parsing.
    • Added cluster state and peer information to responses for successful start, join, and stop operations.

Explanation

Issue [#1078] requires a documented activation size ceiling, rejection before payload allocation, and a test. The PR defines the 256 MiB RAC_CONNECT_MAX_CLUSTER_ACTIVATION_BYTES ceiling, documents it in rac_connect.h and idl/connect.proto, and checks request_size before parse_message. The validator serializes a typed rejection with accepted = false. The test uses a one-byte buffer with an oversized claimed length.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the implementation, security rationale, tests, and stacked-PR context. However, it does not follow the repository template and omits the required Type of Change, label selection, checklist items, and template-based testing details.

Resolution

Update the description to include the required headings and information from the template: Description, Type of Change with the applicable checkbox selected, Testing with completed checklist items, applicable labels such as Commons, the code/style/self-review/documentation checklist, and screenshots or an explicit not-applicable statement.

Explanation

The whole-PR diff adds unrelated cluster orchestration work, including cluster start, join, and stop APIs, runtime state, layer and peer validation, new schema messages, exports, version updates, and broad orchestration tests. These changes are not required by [#1078]. The stacked-branch note explains their presence but does not make them in scope.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated cluster orchestration changes, or merge the prerequisite work separately and rebase this PR so it contains only the [#1078] ceiling, documentation, and focused test changes.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 25.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 12 functions across 3 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Thanks for this, @Adityakk9031! The ceiling does exactly what it says at this head: core/src/connect/rac_connect.cpp:957 checks request_size > RAC_CONNECT_MAX_CLUSTER_ACTIVATION_BYTES before parse_message at :967, so ParseFromArray never runs on an oversized payload and tensor_data is never allocated — and test 11c (core/tests/test_connect_proto_abi.cpp:443-459) pins the ordering with a 1-byte buffer claiming 256 MiB + 1, so moving the check after the parse would fail it under ASAN. The header doc (rac_connect.h:136-147), the idl/connect.proto note and the regenerated lock all check out, and both of issue #1078's done-when boxes are met.

This one is on a maintainer hold for merge order rather than for your code. It is stacked on #723 — 723's tip 69e822696 is an ancestor of your head — so it cannot land before #723 does, and landing it first would squash #723's whole cluster implementation under this title. #723 is itself waiting on the call a maintainer reserved there on 2026-10-14: every branch carrying idl/VERSION 1.6.0 holds a different SCHEMA_LOCK (#723/#1064 19264d5b…, #1017 6ecb51e8…, #1045 70fd8829…, #1046 78b36e7a…, #1047 70f0fe13…, this head d4ee43a4…), so whichever of a differing pair merges second regenerates its lock. Nothing needed from you until that is settled; if this turns out to be the second one, I will ask you to rebase and re-run idl/codegen/generate_all.sh.

One thing worth doing while it waits — not what is holding the merge, and your own #1063 already fixes it: the repeat-start guard at core/src/connect/rac_connect.cpp:776 compares only model_id, so a retry that changes context_window, display_name, framework or supports_streaming is accepted with the stored descriptor. Merging this lands #723's version of that line; #1063 is open and switches it to the full descriptor.

One optional small thing, your call: the idl/connect.proto:271-274 note reads at message scope ("larger messages are rejected before parsing"), while the check lives only in rac_connect_cluster_validate_activation_proto — anything that parses directly still reaches rac_proto_bytes_validate's INT_MAX limit (core/src/foundation/rac_proto_buffer.cpp:30-38). Scoping the sentence to the validator would make it true as written. Cubic reads it the same way (thread).

Not blocking this PR: I opened #{issue} for the same untrusted-allocation shape on the other three cluster entry points (start/join/stop parse with no ceiling) — you're welcome to pick it up if you're interested.

Thanks again — the guard is in the right place and the test is a real one.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Compare the full model descriptor on a repeat cluster start.

The idempotent-start branch compares only model_id(). A repeat ClusterStartRequest with the same cluster_id and model_id but a different display_name, framework, context_window, or supports_streaming returns RAC_SUCCESS. The response carries the stored descriptor, so the caller gets a success that does not match what it sent.

The host start path already handles this case. same_model_descriptor (Line 107) exists to reject repeat starts that change any descriptor field. Use it here too.

Also add test cases to test_cluster_orchestration that change context_window or display_name. Test 5b currently covers only model_id.
