feat(api): send DPoP proofs on every request and recover from a lost or foreign key - #1240
This PR stacks on #1239 (AND-2), which stacks on #1237 (AND-1).
Today a client token copied off an Android device works from anywhere, such as curl. GO-2 and GO-3 let FAPI bind the token to a device key. This PR makes the SDK sign an RFC 9449 DPoP proof on every FAPI request and recover when FAPI rejects one, so a copied token stops working.
DpopMiddleware is a network interceptor, so every OkHttp attempt gets a fresh proof. iat comes from a ServerClock fed from each response's Date.
On 401 device_binding_proof_invalid, the SDK retries once with the server's time. On device_binding_key_mismatch or device_binding_proof_missing, it drops the token, signs out locally, and refreshes the client.
With shared session sync on, the SDK does not sign, and launch drops a token that carries cnf.
When the SDK cannot sign, a token without cnf goes out unsigned. A token with cnf goes out unsigned only for a permanent reason, such as a lost key, and otherwise the request fails with an IOException and the token stays.
A request waits at most five seconds for the key to load, and once one request times out on a load, later ones skip the wait. Three transient failures in a row, or a load pending for 15 seconds, turn signing off. A Keystore slower than 15 seconds therefore signs the user out once for that launch, and signing resumes when the key loads.
A key load that throws any non-cancellation exception, such as a vendor Keystore's IllegalStateException, now marks the key unavailable for the process, so that device stays unbound until the next launch.
Clerk.deleteDeviceKey is the one public API change.
This PR is review-gated on the screenshots and video below, and lands only after GO-3 deploys.
What to focus on
Deadlock. The drop runs in an interceptor while a refresh may hold refreshMutex, so it takes only the storage lock and the refresh requeues.
Interceptor order. DpopRetryMiddleware is outermost, so ClientSyncingMiddleware records the 401's Date before the retry. A test pins the order.
Launch order with shared session sync. The drop runs after the shared-storage reload and before the session-token loop, so a bound token never reaches a request.
Testing
Unit tests cover each rule above, and DeviceBoundTokenFallbackTest runs the full SDK client against MockWebServer.
Live lanes ran on an API 34 emulator against a local FAPI at GO-3's head 2c8d876c14 (clerk/clerk_go#23777), in enforce mode unless noted.
Lane 1. Sign-in, 100 refreshes, relaunch, and sign-out pass, and head binds the client.
Lanes 2 and 7. A token replayed from curl gets 401 device_binding_proof_missing, and 200 in observe mode.
Lane 3. With the clock 20 minutes ahead, each launch request retries once and succeeds.
Lanes 4 and 4b. Deleting the key signs the user out, and sign-in binds a new key.
Lanes 5, 6, and 9. Shared session sync and a Keystore fault work unbound. A sync-on build drops a bound token at launch.
Lane 10 was partial, since no kill landed inside key creation.
Head adds about 2 ms at p50 to a token refresh (15 ms budget) and makes initialize-to-ready 6 percent slower (10 percent budget).
Nothing checked a FAPI without GO-2, StrongBox or TEE keys, or the transient limits on a device.
How to revert
A plain revert works, but turn enforcement off on any instance with bound tokens before a reverted SDK ships. The old SDK cannot prove the key or recover from device_binding_proof_missing.
Screenshots / video
Same emulator and FAPI, enforce on. The screens match, and only head gets a cnf.jkt.

The SDK resolves device signing from shared-session sync and key state. It adds DPoP proof generation, conditional retries using server time, and device-token recovery for specified binding errors. It also adds a public API to delete the device key. The workbench adds a screen to inspect device-binding details and exercise key deletion, token reload, token export, keystore-fault settings, and token refresh timing.
Resolve the remaining device-token sign-out paths before merging: transient signing failures can lose a bound token, and a late shared-session reload can restore one that cannot be used in that mode.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has all six sections: What & why, What to focus on, Testing, Risk, How to revert, and Screenshots / video. It explains the DPoP signing and recovery behavior, the new public API (Clerk.deleteDeviceKey), and the stacking and review gating. The Testing section names unit tests, live lanes on an API 34 emulator, the head commit, and the performance budgets. It also lists the gaps: no device run without GO-2, no StrongBox or TEE check, and no device run of the transient limits. The Risk section names the Keystore latency and the forced sign-out risk. The How to revert section explains that enforcement must be disabled first. The Screenshots section includes before and after images and videos. Two items are weaker: the Risk section does not explicitly say that the diff touches protected paths (token and session storage) or changes a public API .api dump, and the Testing section does not state the exact Gradle commands, though the PR objectives do. These are minor gaps, so the description is mostly complete.
Full details: Device Evidence
Explanation
The pull request changes many files under source/api/, so the device-evidence requirement applies. The description provides a before/after table for the Workbench home screen, but it lists the Device binding screen as new screen before the change. Therefore, it does not provide before/after pairs for that screen or its export, delete-key, keystore-fault, and signed-in states. The description says that a local CA patch was used for live FAPI lanes and describes its purpose, but it does not confirm that both the before and after builds used that patch. The diff confirms the new DeviceBindingActivity and the navigation entry.
Resolution
Update the PR description with before-and-after emulator or device screenshot/video pairs in one table for the Device binding screen and every affected state, including visually unchanged states. If a state cannot be run, state the exact reason. Identify the local CA patch, describe its change and purpose, and explicitly confirm that both the before and after builds used the patch.

Every attempt through Clerk.initialize and Client.get() carries one valid proof with a new jti, including the redirect hop and OkHttp's retry after a dropped socket. iat switches from device time to the FAPI Date once a response arrives. Before, no request carried a proof.

Fix the Detekt InjectDispatcher failure.
Line 1110 uses Dispatchers.IO directly, and the :source:api:detektDebug task fails on it. ConfigurationManager already owns an IO scope. Either suppress the rule on this function or move the dispatch into ConfigurationManager.

Prevent shared-session reload from blocking initialization.
adoptSiblingStateThenDropDeviceBoundToken runs before the first client and session-token refresh jobs. reloadFromSharedStorage() does not set a timeout, and ContentResolver.query(...) is synchronous. A cold or unresponsive peer can therefore delay initialization. Peer-discovery or other reload failures can also end the initialization coroutine before dropDeviceBoundToken() and the refresh jobs run.
Add a real timeout or cancellation boundary for the blocking provider work, catch non-cancellation failures, and always call dropDeviceBoundToken() afterward. Do not rely only on withTimeoutOrNull around the blocking call, because coroutine timeout cancellation does not by itself interrupt arbitrary synchronous I/O.

Three transient key failures make bound tokens lose their device token.
After the third transient gap, DeviceBindingState.current returns NotSigning(KEY_UNAVAILABLE) for the rest of the process. recordSigned does not reset the counter once it reaches the limit. A bound token is then sent unsigned. A device_binding_proof_missing response makes ClientSyncingMiddleware drop the stored device token.
The gaps can come from timeouts alone. At cold start, requests that share the binding can each wait up to DEVICE_KEY_WAIT. Three timeouts stop signing for the process. A key that loads later does not restore signing.
The limit is intentional, and the tests assert the unsigned request. The PR states that bound tokens keep their token on transient failure. The limit changes a transient state into a process-long unsigned state. It then drops the token on the server rejection. TransientKeyFailureLimitTest does not check the stored token after a proof_missing response.
Decide whether a proof_missing response after the transient limit should keep the bound token. Add a test for that case. Also define how signing resumes. A rule that fails bound requests without a reset would block them for the rest of the process.

…ngMiddleware
ClientSyncingMiddleware parses Date once with OkHttp's Headers.getDate, which reads all three HTTP-date forms, and gives the result to both the client state store and the ServerClock. A Date that does not parse leaves the clock's offset alone.
DeviceBinding is Signing with the key holder, or NotSigning for shared session sync, an unavailable Keystore, or a key that is not ready within five seconds. Shared session sync never loads the key.
DpopMiddleware is a network interceptor, so OkHttp's own retries and redirect follow-ups each get a new proof with a new UUID jti for the URL they reach. It waits on the device binding, reads the token from Authorization for ath, and takes iat from the ServerClock that ClientSyncingMiddleware updates. configureSdkState builds that clock and the binding in one place and hands both to ClerkApi. A request still waiting when Clerk resets fails with an IOException.
DeviceBindingError holds the four device_binding_* codes and what each one means for the SDK. DpopRetryMiddleware is the outermost interceptor: on a 401 device_binding_proof_invalid for a signed request with a Date, it closes the response and sends the request once more. ClientSyncingMiddleware, inside it, has already moved the ServerClock to that Date, so the new proof carries the server's time.
On a 401 device_binding_key_mismatch or device_binding_proof_missing, ClientSyncingMiddleware drops the token the request carried through the same compare-and-set and response fence that setDeviceToken uses, signs out locally, and queues a client refresh. It takes no lock a refresh holds, so an in-flight refresh sees the fence and requeues instead of deadlocking. SessionTokenFetcher treats both codes as an invalid session.
…o usable key
A sign failure that is not a loss sends the request without a proof after one attempt and logs one warning with the exception class. A runtime with no usable key that gets device_binding_proof_missing drops its bound token and queues one refresh, and sends no second request.
…nc is on
Shared session sync never signs, so a token that carries cnf cannot work. After the coordinator reloads sibling state, launch drops such a token through setDeviceToken and before the session-token refresh loop starts. Reloading first lets a sibling's newer unbound token replace ours, so we never publish a cleared token that would sign the sibling out. The SharedSessionSyncConfig KDoc says that enabling sync keeps the client unbound and signs a previously bound user out once.
DeviceKeyHolder.deleteKey deletes the stored key whatever state the holder is in, then leaves the holder unresolved so the next request loads or creates a key. Clerk.deleteDeviceKey exposes it behind @FrameworkIntegrationApi; it is the one addition to api.api. DeviceKeyFactory.delete removes the Keystore alias on a device and the stored JVM key under Robolectric.
…interceptors
AGENTS.md allows comments that explain a platform or library constraint. The others described this branch's own code, which its tests pin.
The screen shows the session, the device token, and its cnf.jkt. It exports the token to files/device-token.txt for curl, deletes the device key through Clerk.deleteDeviceKey, times 100 token refreshes and logs p50 and p99 under WorkbenchTiming, and toggles a Keystore fault. With the fault on, the next launch holds an RSA key under the SDK's Keystore alias before Clerk.initialize, so the SDK finds a key it cannot use and runs unbound. Labels are Kotlin constants, as in the rest of the workbench.
Any exception from the key load now leaves the runtime unsigned, and any sign failure sends the request without a proof, so a checked IOException from the Keystore cannot fail every request. The drop now uses the response's Authorization when the 401 carries one, the rule isClientResponseCurrent uses, because DeviceTokenSavingMiddleware has already stored that token. The retry skips a one-shot body. The Clerk.deleteDeviceKey KDoc now says a runtime that does not sign keeps not signing until the next initialize.
Red on purpose: the table, the cold-start timeout, and the non-loss sign and load failures fail against today's send-unsigned fallback. ProofDecision and proofDecision are stubs here.
…ead of sending it unsigned
proofDecision maps the token's cnf claim, the binding, and the sign failure to Sign, SendUnsigned, or FailRequest. A token without cnf, shared session sync, and a key the holder gave up still go out unsigned, so proof_missing drives the one drop. A key that is not ready within the wait, or a load or sign error that is not a loss, fails a cnf request with an IOException and keeps the token. The five-second bound moves from the binding to each request, so a slow Keystore no longer latches the runtime into not signing.
…en before any request
With the reload moved back after the session-token loop, the first fetch sends the local token. With the drop after the loop, the fetch sends the synced cnf token. Each test fails on its misorder.
detekt's InjectDispatcher rejects Dispatchers.IO used in place.
resolveDeviceBinding and DeviceBindingState take the dispatcher as a parameter that defaults to IO,
and ConfigurationManager runs the key delete on the IO scope it already owns, so Clerk only delegates.

while the answer that appends the sent token has not run yet. CI then read an empty list.
Each test now waits on a latch the answer counts down after it records the token.
… end startup
A sibling that never answers must not hold the first session token fetch past SHARED_STORAGE_RELOAD_WAIT,
and a reload that throws must still drop a cnf token and start the client and session token fetches.
… when it hangs or fails
The reload runs a synchronous ContentResolver.query with no bound, and a failure in it ended the
initialization coroutine before the cnf drop and the refresh jobs. It now runs on the manager's IO scope,
startup waits for it at most SHARED_STORAGE_RELOAD_WAIT, and a failure other than cancellation is logged.
A hung query thread finishes on its own; nothing waits on it after the bound.
…mes signing
A working key that loads late must not leave a cnf token going out unsigned for the rest of the process.
Covers the cold-start load with and without a request between the give-up and the completion,
and a request-time load. The case that pinned the old sticky give-up now expects a signed request.
…E_UP
The 15-second give-up was sticky, so a working key that loaded late left a cnf token going out unsigned
for the rest of the process. KeyLoad.GaveUp now moves to Ready when the load completes, and Ready resets
the transient count to zero whatever it was, so the next request signs.
…state
The polls on loadedState had no deadline, so one run of the request-time reset case spun for ten minutes.
Each poll now fails after five seconds, and that case checks its first request failed on KEY_NOT_READY.

Reject bound tokens during shared-session adoption.
A reload that exceeds the two-second wait continues in scope.async. When it later receives a sibling snapshot, applyDeviceTokenSnapshot() can restore its cnf token after startup has cleared the local token. Shared-session mode does not sign requests, so later requests send the restored token without DPoP.

What & why
This PR stacks on #1239 (AND-2), which stacks on #1237 (AND-1).
Today a client token copied off an Android device works from anywhere, such as
curl. GO-2 and GO-3 let FAPI bind the token to a device key. This PR makes the SDK sign an RFC 9449 DPoP proof on every FAPI request and recover when FAPI rejects one, so a copied token stops working.DpopMiddlewareis a network interceptor, so every OkHttp attempt gets a fresh proof.iatcomes from aServerClockfed from each response'sDate.device_binding_proof_invalid, the SDK retries once with the server's time. Ondevice_binding_key_mismatchordevice_binding_proof_missing, it drops the token, signs out locally, and refreshes the client.cnf.cnfgoes out unsigned. A token withcnfgoes out unsigned only for a permanent reason, such as a lost key, and otherwise the request fails with anIOExceptionand the token stays.IllegalStateException, now marks the key unavailable for the process, so that device stays unbound until the next launch.Clerk.deleteDeviceKeyis the one public API change. This PR is review-gated on the screenshots and video below, and lands only after GO-3 deploys.
What to focus on
refreshMutex, so it takes only the storage lock and the refresh requeues.DpopRetryMiddlewareis outermost, soClientSyncingMiddlewarerecords the 401'sDatebefore the retry. A test pins the order.Testing
DeviceBoundTokenFallbackTestruns the full SDK client againstMockWebServer.2c8d876c14(clerk/clerk_go#23777), in enforce mode unless noted.curlgets 401device_binding_proof_missing, and 200 in observe mode. How to revert
A plain revert works, but turn enforcement off on any instance with bound tokens before a reverted SDK ships. The old SDK cannot prove the key or recover from
