  • Position Monitoring Dashboard: Real-time position visualization

Solution: Position Management with Exit Tracking

Manage active positions and generate exit recommendations using validated balanced exit strategy (8% TP / 5% SL).

Requirements

  • Track all open positions with real-time P&L calculation
  • Monitor for 8% TP / 5% SL levels using validated exit parameters
  • Generate exit recommendations when conditions met (enhancement needed)
  • Alert human for review before executing exits (integrate with CLI Human-in-Loop Trading Interface - Text-based decision approval #308)
  • Log all position lifecycle events for analysis
  • Support multiple concurrent positions (implemented)

Position Lifecycle

Entry → Active Monitoring → Exit Trigger → Human Alert → Execute Exit
  ↓           ↓                  ↓             ↓              ↓

    1. Exit Alert System

    New Components (src/trading_tools/position_tracker.py):

    Alert Types:

    • APPROACHING_TAKE_PROFIT - Within 2% of TP target
    • APPROACHING_STOP_LOSS - Within 2% of SL level
    • STOP_ADJUSTED - Stop order modified
    • PROFIT_TARGET_REACHED - TP level hit
    • LOSS_THRESHOLD_REACHED - SL level hit

    Alert Features:

    • 📊 Severity Levels: INFO / WARNING / CRITICAL
    • 🔔 Alert Cooldown: Prevents spam (default 5 min)
    • 📝 Alert History: Full tracking per position
    • 💬 Formatted Messages: Human-readable with emojis

    Example Output:

    📊 TQQQ approaching take profit! Current: $53.50, Distance: 1.8%
    ⚠️ SPY approaching stop loss! Current: $425.00, Distance: 1.2%
    🚨 NVDA profit target reached! Current: $520.00, Profit: 8.3%

    2. Dynamic Stop Integration

    Enhanced (src/trading/trading_cycle.py):

    Documentation Updated ✅

    Added comprehensive documentation addressing how alerts work:

    New Sections Added

    1. How Alerts Are Triggered:

    2. Alert Output Locations:

    • Console output (real-time display)
    • Log files (logs/trading.log)
    • Daily reports (markdown)
    • In-memory (alert history per position)

    3. Alert Execution Flow:

    • Complete step-by-step diagram
    • Shows trigger → check → cooldown → display flow
    • Explains when alerts are skipped

    4. Alert Frequency & Cooldown:

    • Example timeline showing cooldown behavior
    • Explains 5-minute anti-spam mechanism
    • Clarifies twice-daily vs manual checks

    5. Limitations & Recommendations:

    • ❌ No email/SMS - Console/log only
    • ⚠️ Twice-daily checks - Not real-time (by design)
    • 📋 Manual monitoring required - Must view logs
    • Recommended workflows for active vs automated monitoring

    6. Expanded Future Enhancements:

    • Email/SMS notifications (Twilio, SendGrid)
    • Webhooks (PagerDuty, Slack)
    • Custom alert rules
    • Real-time WebSocket monitoring
    • Web dashboard

    Documentation File

    docs/position_management_enhancements.md now fully documents:

    • WHAT alerts exist (5 types)
    • WHEN they trigger (manual/automatic)
    • WHERE they appear (console/logs/reports)
    • HOW to access them (commands, monitoring workflows)
    • WHY they're limited (API efficiency trade-offs)

    Key Clarifications

    Alert Triggering:

    # This branch alone - manual only
    python main.py paper-trade SYMBOL

    # With GTC branch (#287) - automatic twice daily
    # 9:20 AM ET - Morning routine
    # 3:50 PM ET - Evening routine

    No External Notifications:

    • Alerts are in-system only
    • Must actively monitor console or logs
    • Future enhancement needed for email/SMS

    Trade-off Explanation:

    • Twice-daily checks = 90% API cost savings
    • Not real-time, but sufficient for GTC orders
    • Broker manages exits automatically via bracket orders

    Quick Win Implemented: Alert History Persistence ✅

    Problem Solved

    Before: Alert history lost on restart

    # Session 1
    alerts = cycle.check_position_alerts(broker_state)
    # → ⚠️ TQQQ approaching TP! (alert generated)

    # Program exits...

    # Session 2 (restart)
    alerts = cycle.check_position_alerts(broker_state)
    # → ⚠️ TQQQ approaching TP! (alert generated AGAIN - no memory of previous alert)

    After: Alert history persists across restarts

    # Session 1
    alerts = cycle.check_position_alerts(broker_state)
    # → ⚠️ TQQQ approaching TP! (alert generated, saved to local_state.json)

    # Program exits... alert history saved

    # Session 2 (restart - loads local_state.json)
    alerts = cycle.check_position_alerts(broker_state)
    # → ⏭️ Skipped (cooldown active from previous session)

    Implementation

    Commit: 45e734d

    New Methods in PositionTracker

    1. Serialization:

    def to_dict(self) -> Dict[str, Any]:
        """Serialize tracker state including all positions and alert history."""
        return {
            'config': {...},
            'alert_counter': self.alert_counter,
            'positions': {
                position_id: position.to_dict()  # includes alert_history[]
                for position_id, position in self.positions.items()
            }
        }

    2. Deserialization:

    def restore_from_dict(self, data: Dict[str, Any]) -> None:
        """Restore tracker state from serialized data."""
        # Restores:
        # - All positions
        # - Complete alert history per position
        # - last_alert_time (for cooldown)
        # - Alert counter state

    Updated CostEfficientTradeCycle

    Save on every state update:

    def save_local_state(self):
        """Save local state to JSON including position tracker with alert history"""
        self.local_state["last_update"] = datetime.now().isoformat()

        # Persist position tracker state (including alert history)
        self.local_state["position_tracker_state"] = self.position_tracker.to_dict()

        with open(self.state_file, 'w') as f:
            json.dump(self.local_state, f, indent=2)

    Restore on startup:

    def load_local_state(self) -> Dict[str, Any]:
        """Load local JSON state (for human reference)"""
        state = json.load(f)

        # Restore position tracker with alert history
        if 'position_tracker_state' in state:
            self.position_tracker.restore_from_dict(state['position_tracker_state'])
            logger.info("Restored position tracker with alert history")

        return state

        }
      },
      "last_update": "2025-01-10T15:50:00"
    }

    Benefits

    ✅ Alert history survives restarts - No data loss
    ✅ Cooldown persists across sessions - No alert spam after restart
    ✅ Post-trade analysis - Can review alert patterns
    ✅ No additional API calls - Uses local state only
    ✅ Complete audit trail - Every alert ever generated is saved
    ✅ Backward compatible - Gracefully handles missing tracker state

    Testing Results

    Roundtrip serialization:

    ✅ Serialized tracker
       Positions: 1
       Alert counter: 1
       Alert history entries: 1
    ✅ Restored to new tracker
       Restored positions: 1
       Restored alerts: 1

    Cooldown persistence:

    • Alert generated at T+0
    • Saved to local_state.json
    • Program restarted
    • Alert cooldown still active (no duplicate alert)

    Next Optimization Opportunities

    Based on user feedback, there are additional optimization opportunities to explore:

    1. Broker State Caching

    Idea: Cache fetch_broker_state() results for 60 seconds
    Benefit: Reduce API calls in multi-command sessions
    Savings: 33-50% API calls in interactive use

    2. Piggyback Position Updates

    Idea: First API call in session also updates alerts in background
    Benefit: Fresh alerts without dedicated check
    Pattern: "Smuggle" alert check into regular broker fetch

    3. Background Alert Refresh

    Idea: Long-running sessions auto-refresh alerts every 5 minutes
    Benefit: Always-fresh alerts without manual trigger
    Use case: Daemon mode, CLI tool sessions

    These warrant separate issues/PRs for focused implementation.

    Files Modified

      • Added to_dict() serialization
      • Added restore_from_dict() deserialization
    • src/trading/trading_cycle.py (+18 lines)

      • Updated save_local_state() to persist tracker
      • Updated load_local_state() to restore tracker

    Total: +86 insertions, -3 deletions
