Check existing positions before SELL suggestions #345
System suggests SELL without checking if user holds the position, leading to confusing "short selling" warnings.
User Feedback
When user asks about QQQ and system suggests SELL, it shows:
⚠️ WARNING: SELL signal detected.
This system does not support short selling.
Only SELL if you currently hold this position.
But doesn't check if user actually holds QQQ!
Solution: Position Context in Suggestions
Before any trade suggestion, check existing positions and display context:
# Before showing suggestionpositions=get_cached_positions() # Use local cache firstposition=next((pforpinpositionsifp['symbol'] ==ticker), None)
ifdecision.signal==SELL:
ifposition:
print(f"📊 Current Position: {position['qty']} shares @ {position['avg_entry_price']}")
print(f" Unrealized P/L: {position['unrealized_pl']}")
else:
print("⚠️ No position in {ticker} to sell")
return# Don't suggest short selling
Display Context Examples
When suggesting BUY (no position):
📊 QQQ @ $623.23
You currently hold: 0 shares
⬆️ BUY SUGGESTED
Summary: Added position checking before SELL suggestions to prevent confusing short selling warnings.
Changes Made
File: src/cli/cli_session.py
1. New Helper Method: _check_position_for_ticker()
Fetches current position for a given ticker from Alpaca broker.
def_check_position_for_ticker(self, ticker: str) ->Optional[dict]:
"""Check if user currently holds a position in the ticker."""try:
ifnotself.account_monitor:
returnNonepositions=self.account_monitor.get_positions()
returnnext((pforpinpositionsifp.get('symbol') ==ticker), None)
exceptExceptionase:
logger.warning(f"Failed to check position for {ticker}: {e}")
returnNone
2. New Display Method: _display_position_context()
Shows position context before any trade suggestion.
Output Examples:
With Position (e.g., SPY):
============================================================
📊 Position Context: SPY
============================================================
Current Position: 14 shares @ $657.60 (avg entry)
Current Price: $683.00
📈 Unrealized P/L: +$355.67 (+3.86%)
Market Value: $9,562.00
============================================================
Without Position (e.g., AAPL):
============================================================
📊 Position Context: AAPL
============================================================
ℹ️ No position in AAPL (0 shares)
============================================================
3. Updated: _handle_trade_request()
Added position check and SELL blocking logic.
Key Changes:
Checks position before displaying suggestion
Displays position context to user
Blocks SELL if no position - exits early without confirmation
Warns when SELL will close existing position
Code:
# Check position context before suggestionposition=self._check_position_for_ticker(decision.suggestion.ticker)
# Display position contextself._display_position_context(decision.suggestion.ticker, position, decision.suggestion.signal.value)
# Block SELL if no position existsifdecision.suggestion.signal.value.upper() =="SELL":
ifnotposition:
print(f"\n❌ Cannot execute SELL for {decision.suggestion.ticker}")
print(" → No position held (system does not support short selling)")
print(" → Suggestion cancelled for safety")
return# Exit earlyelse:
print(f"\n⚠️ SELL will close your position in {decision.suggestion.ticker}")
User Experience Improvements
Scenario 1: SELL Suggestion with Position ✅
Input: "is SPY a good sell?" (user holds 14 shares)
Output:
============================================================
📊 Position Context: SPY
============================================================
Current Position: 14 shares @ $657.60 (avg entry)
Current Price: $683.00
📈 Unrealized P/L: +$355.67 (+3.86%)
Market Value: $9,562.00
============================================================
⚠️ SELL will close your position in SPY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📊 SPY @ $683.00
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
⬇️ SELL SUGGESTED
Confidence: 0.75
[... rest of suggestion ...]
Scenario 2: SELL Suggestion without Position 🚫
Input: "is AAPL a good sell?" (user has 0 shares)
Output:
============================================================
📊 Position Context: AAPL
============================================================
ℹ️ No position in AAPL (0 shares)
============================================================
❌ Cannot execute SELL for AAPL
→ No position held (system does not support short selling)
→ Suggestion cancelled for safety
[EXITS - no suggestion shown, no confirmation requested]
Scenario 3: BUY Suggestion (with or without position) ✅
Input: "should I buy QQQ?"
Output: Shows position context (0 shares if no position), then displays BUY suggestion normally.
Benefits
✅ Prevents Confusion: No more "short selling not supported" warnings when user has no position
✅ Shows Context: User sees their current position (qty, P/L) before making decisions
✅ Safety Check: Blocks SELL attempts when no position exists
✅ Better UX: Clear, informative messages guide user decisions
✅ No Extra Costs: Uses existing Alpaca API calls (no additional caching needed for MVP)
Testing
Demo script created: test_position_check_demo.py
Tested Scenarios:
✅ SELL with position → shows position, allows SELL
✅ SELL without position → blocks SELL, clear error message
✅ BUY with position → shows position, allows BUY
✅ BUY without position → shows 0 shares, allows BUY
Live Test Results (from real Alpaca paper account):
Current positions: META (8 shares), SPY (14 shares)
✅ Implementation complete and tested. Position checking now prevents SELL suggestions when user has no position. See implementation comment above for full details.
Methods Added: 3 new methods for position checking
Lines Changed: ~60 lines added
Testing: Validated with live Alpaca paper account
How It Works
User Experience Flow:
1️⃣ User asks about ticker (e.g., "should I sell AAPL?")
2️⃣ System checks position → Fetches from Alpaca broker
3️⃣ Display position context:
If position exists: Shows qty, entry, P/L, market value
If no position: Shows "0 shares"
4️⃣ Decision logic:
BUY signal: Show suggestion regardless of position
SELL signal + position exists: Show suggestion with warning
SELL signal + NO position: 🚫 Block with error, exit early
Code Entry Points
Main Handler: src/cli/cli_session.py:225 → _handle_trade_request() Position Check: src/cli/cli_session.py:286 → _check_position_for_ticker() Display Context: src/cli/cli_session.py:306 → _display_position_context()
Testing Commands
Try these in the CLI:
python main.py
# Test with position you hold:> should I sell SPY?# Test with ticker you don't hold:> should I sell AAPL?# Test BUY (works with or without position):> should I buy QQQ?

Future Optimization (Blocked by #336)
Current implementation makes one Alpaca API call per suggestion (
get_positions()).After #336 (SQLite Cache) is complete:
For now: One API call per suggestion is acceptable for UX improvement.
