Thanks for this, @Adityakk9031! The fix is right and it is exactly what #1054 asked for: One coordination note, since the hold is a merge-order call rather than a defect. This branch is stacked on #723, so it carries #723's whole cluster implementation and cannot land before it — and #1017, #1045, #1046, #1047 and #1071 all bump the IDL to 1.6.0 with a different One optional point while the queue clears — not a blocker, take it or leave it. cubic's inline thread is the only open one on this head, and it is about #723's stacked code rather than your 14-line change — discussion_r4282837190; feel free to reply there or leave it, it is not holding anything. Thanks again — good, careful fix. Reviewed with help from Claude Code and Codex. |

Thanks for the follow-up, @Adityakk9031 — the dedicated rejection reason reads well ("first stage's input, not an inter-stage handoff") and test 11a pins the exact wording, so a caller debugging a rejected activation now gets the real cause. The fix is right, and neither review found a blocker in it. This stays on hold, and it is purely a merge-order call rather than anything in the code. The branch is stacked on #723, so it cannot land before it — and every branch in that group bumps the IDL with a different Reviewed with help from Claude Code and Codex. |

Hey @Adityakk9031, this PR has merge conflicts with its base branch now, could you rebase and resolve them, keeping the diff as minimal as possible? Thanks! 🙏 |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Compare the full model descriptor on a repeat cluster start.
An idempotent rac_connect_cluster_start_proto call compares only model_id. A repeat start with the same cluster_id can change display_name, framework, context_window, or supports_streaming. The call then returns success with the stored descriptor, so the caller does not learn that its change was ignored.
The host start path avoids this. It uses same_model_descriptor, which compares every field. Use the same helper here.

Layer 0 is the first stage's input, not an inter-stage handoff, so the validator no longer seeds
valid_boundarywithfrom_layer == 0; only thelayer_startof a non-first stage is accepted. The header doc is updated and the test pins the rejection offrom_layer == 0alongside the existing valid (16) and invalid (7) cases.Stacked on #723, so the diff includes its commits until it merges.
Closes #1054
Summary by cubic
Adds cluster orchestration to the Connect subsystem for sharding a model's layers across multiple devices, and fixes activation validation so
from_layer == 0is rejected as the first stage's input rather than an inter-stage handoff.New Features
rac_connect_cluster_*ABI functions: start (with idempotent same-layout restart), join, stop, and validate activation.Written for commit 39195b8. Summary will update on new commits.
