0 is the "unset" sentinel from QueryOverrides down to BM25Index/fuse_rankings, so an explicit bm25_k1 = 0 or rrf_k = 0 was silently replaced by 1.2 / 60. This takes the issue's second option: both are now rejected (> 0 required) at the session-config and per-query ABI boundaries and in the retrieve operator params, and the four binding doc comments (Swift, Kotlin, Python, Web) state > 0. bm25_b = 0 stays valid. Tests: ABI search with zero bm25_k1 / rrf_k returns INVALID_ARGUMENT; solution-runner retrieve params reject 0.

Stacked on #1048 (which is stacked on #1017), so the diff includes their commits until they merge.

Closes #1056

Summary by cubic

Rejects explicit bm25_k1 = 0 and rrf_k = 0 instead of silently substituting the 1.2 / 60 defaults, because 0 is the "unset" sentinel all the way down the stack; both must now be > 0. bm25_b = 0 stays valid.

Validation

  • BM25 and RRF values are checked at the session-config and per-query ABI boundaries and in retrieve operator params: zero, non-finite, and out-of-range values are rejected.
  • Floats parse and format with the classic locale, so malformed strings ("30junk", "0,8") fail rather than being silently defaulted.
  • The on-device vector store is whitelisted to USEARCH; PGVECTOR is rejected and unknown enum values are invalid arguments.
  • RRF accumulates in double sortable precision so tuned scores don't tie.

Threading

  • BM25 k1/b, RRF k, and vector-store knobs are wired through the retrieve backend, graph inputs, and the Swift, Kotlin, Python, and Web bindings; VectorStore moved into an enum in rag.proto (schema 1.7.0), replacing the one in solutions.proto.

Closes #1056. Also includes the stacked changes from #913 and #1019.

Written for commit 32f9250. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • RAG queries can override BM25 tuning, reciprocal-rank fusion settings, and vector-store selection. Unspecified options continue to use session defaults.
    • The on-device USEARCH vector store is available through the Kotlin, Python, Swift, and web SDKs.
  • Validation
    • Invalid retrieval settings are rejected, including out-of-range BM25 values, non-positive RRF values, and unsupported vector-store selections.
  • Improvements
    • Retrieval results with equal scores now appear in a consistent order.

📝 Walkthrough

RAG configuration and retrieval now support BM25 parameters, an RRF constant, and vector-store selection. Core validates and applies these settings. Kotlin, Python, Swift, and Web bindings expose per-query overrides. On-device paths reject PGVECTOR.

Changes: RAG retrieval tuning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retrieval contracts and defaults

The RAG schema adds vector-store selection and BM25/RRF settings for configuration and per-query retrieval. Core configuration and graph inputs define tuning defaults. The language bindings add corresponding public options.
Apply tuning in the retrieval pipeline
core/src/features/rag/rag_backend.cpp, core/src/features/rag/bm25_index.*, core/src/features/rag/rag_fusion.*, core/src/features/rag/rag_pipeline_graph.*, core/tests/test_rag_fusion.cpp
The backend passes configured and overridden values into the retrieval graph. BM25 scoring and ranking fusion use supplied values. Fusion uses double-precision scores and breaks equal-score ties by candidate ID. Tests check score changes for different BM25 and RRF settings.
Validate and map retrieval options

The RAG ABI and engine-backed retrieve operator validate tuning values and vector-store selections. Float parameters use locale-independent formatting and parsing. Language bindings map per-query values into requests. Tests cover option mapping, malformed or out-of-range values, score changes, and PGVECTOR rejection.

Explicit zero tuning values can be ignored in solution configurations and Web requests, and existing TypeScript consumers importing VectorStore from the solutions subpath can fail typechecking. These configuration and integration issues should be addressed before merge.

Thanks for this, @Adityakk9031! The change does what it says: an explicit bm25_k1 = 0 or rrf_k = 0 now comes back as INVALID_ARGUMENT at the session-config and per-query ABI boundaries and from the retrieve operator, instead of being quietly swapped for 1.2 / 60, and the four binding docs finally state > 0. I checked that presence is threaded correctly in Swift, Kotlin, Python and Web (so a real 0 reaches the validator instead of being dropped on the way), that validation runs before the backend config is built, and that bm25_b = 0 stays valid end to end.

This one is on a maintainer hold, and nothing about it is a judgement on your code:

  1. It is the third of a three-deep stack. feat(rag): wire vector_store, BM25, and RRF params into retrieve backend (#913) #1017 → feat(bindings): expose BM25, RRF and vector-store knobs on RAG query options (#1019) #1048 → this PR, all still open, and this branch carries both parents' commits — so it cannot land before them, and landing it first would land feat(rag): wire vector_store, BM25, and RRF params into retrieve backend (#913) #1017's whole commons wiring under this squashed title. That ordering call, and whether this PR is where the contract should land, is Sanchit's.
  2. The IDL change is the part a maintainer should eyeball. Moving VectorStore from solutions.proto into rag.proto changes the generated module path for external consumers of the published @runanywhere/proto-ts (package and wire number are unchanged), and it carries idl/VERSION 1.5.1 → 1.6.0 with a recomputed SCHEMA_LOCK, so whichever IDL-carrying PR merges first, the rest have to re-lock. The same note meant the sandboxed local build was skipped, so nothing here was compiled on our side — CI covers it in full.

While it waits, two things are worth a look — both are small, and both were flagged independently by CodeRabbit, cubic and Codex:

  1. bindings/swift/Sources/RunAnywhere/Public/API/Rag/RagSession.swift:223 — if let rrfK = options?.rrfK { retrieval.rrfK = Int32(rrfK) } traps for any rrfK outside the Int32 range (e.g. Int.max), so query / queryStream kill the host process before the ABI can return INVALID_ARGUMENT. It is the only binding where an out-of-range rrfK is a crash rather than a catchable error; the repo's own pattern is a few files over, guard let wire = Int32(exactly: rrfK) else { throw SDKException(...) } (Namespaces/ModelsNamespace.swift:526). (CodeRabbit, cubic)
  2. core/src/solutions/operators/op_engine_backed.cpp:802 — the bm25_b check only rejects > 1.0f, so an explicit bm25_b="-0.5" parses fine and is then dropped by the >= 0.0f guard at :872: the session default applies with no error. That is the same silent substitution this PR removes, and it contradicts your own ABI validator (rac_rag_proto_abi.cpp:346 rejects b < 0). Adding the lower bound beside the existing check does it: } else if (has_param(spec, "bm25_b") && bm25_b_ < 0.0f) { param_error_ = "retrieve param 'bm25_b' must be in 0.0...1.0"; }. (CodeRabbit, cubic)

Not blocking this PR: I opened #{issue} for the last surface #1056 names — a solution YAML bm25_k1: 0 / rrf_k: 0 still falls back to the defaults, because config_loader.cpp:547-552 parses it with no check and solution_converter.cpp:146 / :152 drop the explicit zero before the operator guard can see the key. You're welcome to take it.

Thanks again — genuinely good work, and sorry to make you wait on the scheduling call.

Reject explicit invalid tuning values before solution conversion.

When a solution contains bm25_k1 = 0 or rrf_k = 0, solution_converter.cpp omits those fields. The values then cannot reach RetrieveNode for validation and can be replaced by session defaults. A negative bm25_b is also omitted. Validate these values while their presence is still known, before expand_rag converts the solution.

Validate explicitly supplied bm25_k1, rrf_k, and bm25_b values in the solution
conversion flow before expand_rag omits invalid values: reject zero for bm25_k1
and rrf_k, and negative values for bm25_b. Preserve the existing conversion
behavior for valid values.

Preserve explicit bm25_b: 0 during solution conversion.

populate_rag parses YAML zero into RAGConfig, but expand_rag only forwards values greater than zero. The reachable retrieve operator then omits bm25_b, so the query uses the session default instead of disabling BM25 length normalization. Preserve field presence in RAGConfig and forward present values, including zero. Invalid values remain subject to the existing retrieve validation.

Preserve whether `bm25_b` was explicitly supplied in `RAGConfig`, and update
`expand_rag` to forward it whenever present, including zero, instead of
filtering with a greater-than-zero check; leave invalid-value handling to the
existing retrieve validation.

Thanks for the follow-up commits, @Adityakk9031 — both things from my last note are fixed and verified at 2a154af: RagSession.swift:223 now narrows rrfK and retrievalTopK through a throwing Int32(exactly:) helper (:238-244) instead of trapping, and op_engine_backed.cpp:810 rejects a supplied bm25_b below 0 as well as above 1, pinned by the bm25_b = "-0.5" row at test_solution_runner.cpp:1451. The classic-locale float formatting (format_float_param, solution_converter.cpp:45) is a good catch too — that one would only have bitten on a comma-decimal host.

The change still does what it says, and nothing in it blocks a merge on the code. This one remains on a maintainer hold, and nothing about it is a judgement on your work:

  1. It is the third of a three-deep stack (feat(rag): wire vector_store, BM25, and RRF params into retrieve backend (#913) #1017 → feat(bindings): expose BM25, RRF and vector-store knobs on RAG query options (#1019) #1048 → this PR, all still open) and this branch carries both parents' commits, so the ordering call is Sanchit's.
  2. The IDL change — moving VectorStore into rag.proto, with idl/VERSION 1.5.1 → 1.6.0 and a recomputed SCHEMA_LOCK — is the part a maintainer should eyeball, because it moves the generated module path for external consumers of the published @runanywhere/proto-ts (package and wire number unchanged).

Two follow-ups are on the record, neither blocking:

Thanks again — sorry to keep you waiting on the scheduling call.

## ts-proto 2.x Release Notes

The 2.x release of ts-proto migrated the low-level Protobuf serializing that its `encode` and `decode` method use from the venerable `protobufjs` package to `@bufbuild/protobuf`.

If you only used the `encode` and `decode` methods, this should largely be a non-breaking change.

However, if you used any code that used the old `protobufjs` `Writer` or `Reader` classes, you'll need to update your code to use the new `@bufbuild/protobuf` classes:

    `import { BinaryReader, BinaryWriter } from "@bufbuild/protobuf/wire";
    `

If migrating to `@bufbuild/protobuf` is a blocker for you, you can pin your `ts-proto` version to `1.x`.

Disclaimer & apology: I had intended to release ts-proto 2.x as an alpha release, but didn't get the semantic-release config correct, and so ts-proto 2.x was published as a major release without a proper alpha/beta cycle.

If you could file reports (or better PRs!) for any issues you come across while the release is still fresh, that would be greatly appreciated.

Any tips or tricks for others on the migration would also be appreciated!

The default behavior is `forceLong=number`, which will internally still use the `long` library to encode/decode values on the wire (so you will still see a `util.Long = Long` line in your output), but will convert the `long` values to `number` automatically for you. Note that a runtime error is thrown if, while doing this conversion, a 64-bit value is larger than can be correctly stored as a `number`.

  * With `--ts_proto_opt=useJsTypeOverride`, 64-bit numbers will be output as the FieldOption.JSType specified on the field. This takes precedence over the `forceLong` option provided.

  * With `--ts_proto_opt=esModuleInterop=true` changes output to be `esModuleInterop` compliant.

Specifically the `Long` imports will be generated as `import Long from 'long'` instead of `import * as Long from 'long'`.

  * With `--ts_proto_opt=env=node` or `browser` or `both`, ts-proto will make environment-specific assumptions in your output. This defaults to `both`, which makes no environment-specific assumptions.

Using `node` changes the types of `bytes` from `Uint8Array` to `Buffer` for easier integration with the node ecosystem which generally uses `Buffer`.

Currently `browser` doesn't have any specific behavior other than being "not `node`". It probably will soon/at some point.

  * With `--ts_proto_opt=useOptionals=messages` (for message fields) or `--ts_proto_opt=useOptionals=all` (for message and scalar fields), fields are declared as optional keys, e.g. `field?: Message` instead of the default `field: Message | undefined`.

ts-proto defaults to `useOptionals=none` because it:

    1. Prevents typos when initializing messages, and
    2. Provides the most consistent API to readers
    3. Ensures production messages are properly initialized with all fields.

# Implicit Presence

Covers why the Protobuf team regrets implicit field presence

Implicit presence — the proto3 behavior in which a singular scalar field has no hazzer and the value `0`, `false` or `""` is indistinguishable from “never set” — is a design decision the Protobuf team regrets.

We do not recommend using implicit presence for new fields.

  * In proto3, prefer to tag your fields `optional`. This is a weak guidance though; if you are still using the Go Open API you may have good reason to choose to prefer implicit presence fields.
  * Explicit presence is the silent default in Protobuf Editions going forward.

For the operational details of how presence behaves in each dialect, see the Field Presence application note. This page is about why.

## What Implicit Presence Is

Field presence is whether a message tracks that a field was set, separately from what it was set to.

  * Under explicit presence, the message stores a presence bit alongside the value and generates a `has_foo()` hazzer. </excerpt>

However, if you used any code that used the old `protobufjs` `Writer` or `Reader` classes, you'll need to update your code to use the new `@bufbuild/protobuf` classes:

    `import { BinaryReader, BinaryWriter } from "@bufbuild/protobuf/wire";

# Overview

ts-proto generates TypeScript types from protobuf schemas.

I.e. given a `person.proto` schema like:

    message Person {
      string name = 1;
    }

ts-proto will generate a `person.ts` file like:

    interface Person {
      name: string
    }

    const Person = {
      encode(person): Writer { ... }
      decode(reader): Person { ... }
      toJSON(person): unknown { ... }
      fromJSON(data): Person { ... }
    }

It also knows about services and will generate types for them as well, i.e.:

    export interface PingService {
      ping(request: PingRequest): Promise<PingResponse>;
    }

It will also generate client implementations of `PingService`; currently Twirp, grpc-web, grpc-js and nestjs are supported.

# QuickStart

  * `npm install ts-proto`
  * `protoc --plugin=./node_modules/.bin/protoc-gen-ts_proto --ts_proto_out=. ./simple.proto`
    * (Note that the output parameter name, `ts_proto_out`, is named based on the suffix of the plugin's name, i.e. "ts_proto" suffix in the `--plugin=./node_modules/.bin/protoc-gen-ts_proto` parameter becomes the `_out` prefix, per `protoc`'s CLI conventions.)
    * On Windows, use `protoc --plugin=protoc-gen-ts_proto=".\\node_modules\\.bin\\protoc-gen-ts_proto.cmd" --ts_proto_out=. ./simple.proto` (see #93)
    * Ensure you're using a modern `protoc` (see installation instructions for your platform, i.e. `protoc` v`3.0.0` doesn't support the `_opt` flag

This will generate `*.ts` source files for the given `*.proto` types.…[truncated]</excerpt>

Preserve explicit zero values in the Web protobuf encoder.

makeRAGQuery forwards the overrides, but the ts-proto generator omits noDefaultsForOptionals. As a result, explicit bm25K1: 0, rrfK: 0, and bm25B: 0 can be omitted by RAGQueryOptions.encode. Core can therefore miss the required zero-value rejection and ignore the valid bm25B = 0 override.

Update the Web ts-proto generation options used by RAGQueryOptions.encode to
enable noDefaultsForOptionals, so makeRAGQuery preserves explicitly supplied
zero values for bm25K1, bm25B, and rrfK.
